Flash Builder 4 Is Finally Here

Today, Adobe has announced three software releases: Flash Builder 4, ColdFusion Builder, and Social service. That's right, after about two years of development Adobe has finally released Flash Builder 4 (a successor of Flex Builder 3). Why it took Adobe so long to release it? An expected answer is, "This was a complete re-thinking of the designer-developer workflow plus a complete re-design of Flex components". My guess is different: lack of proper investments into this project by Adobe management. I don't have any internal information that could prove this statement. It just my gut feeling backed up by my observations of the development this and some other similar products. I've seen the same dragging development of JavaFX by Sun Microsystems. Microsoft, on the contrary, releases new versions of Silverlight every 9 months or so. I don't think Microsoft has smarter software engineers - they just put the money where their mouth is.

There are many different types of command line options that programs need to recognize. Many languages (e.g.: bash and perl) has built-in processing of command line options; Java does not. The Java Command Line Options (JCLO) package performs this task for a variety of option styles. It also uses Java's reflection capability to automatically assign values to variables in a specified class.

Many Flex and Flash developers were waiting for these news for a year. The public Beta 1 of new Flash Builder 4, Flash Catalyst and Flex 4 SDK (previously codenamed Gumbo) has been released by Adobe. First, about the name change. What used to be known as Flex Builder is Flash Builder now. The reason for such re-branding is clear to me. Adobe wants separation between free open source software (Flex) and commercial IDE that can be used for building content for Flash Player VM.

In my opinion this is THE biggest announcement that I?ve heard from Adobe since the release Flex 2 in the Summer of 2006. This is bigger than open sourcing Flex. This is bigger than AIR. Here's the news: Adobe is open sourcing AMF protocol and messaging under LGPL V3. Christophe Coenraets, a Senior Flex Evangelist from Adobe, told me about this new free product called BlazeDS. While many people are using Flex for creating cool widgets that can make your Web page prettier, enterprise Flex developers have to deal with such boring things as bringing data to the client. And they want to do this as fast as possible. AMF3 protocol allows your Web application to send the data over the wire at lease 10 times faster than a regular HTTP.
