Cloud Computing and Virtualization Expo Show Report

I remember back-in-the-day when Virtual meant ‘almost,’ ‘simulated’ or ‘in essence’ as in, ‘I’m virtually there.’ Today, as it has made it’s way into computer terminology, it can mean actual or real things that are done over computers. Virtualization has been the main enabler of Cloud Computing and has become an important tool for IT.

SCM Microsystems Japan Addresses IT Security

Together with Digital Media Research Institute, Inc., SCM Microsystems Japan and DNP are launching a new solution that keeps important digital data safe using cloud computing technologies. The solution is a high-security data storage system developed by DNP, which consists of DNP's TranC'ert DNA software, a SIM card and SCM Microsystems' @MAXX lite secure smart card reader. Digital Media Research Institute, Inc. is providing sales and consulting services for the implementation of the new system. DNP's TranC'ert DNA software splits up and encrypts sensitive or confidential data, and stores it on three servers, which secures and protects the information from loss, damage or theft.

Should Developers Care About Cloud Computing?

It seems like just about every cloud computing discussion with a development audience results in the same question being asked: “Why does this matter to me?” As cloud computing first appears to be primarily an operational-centric paradigm, it is easy to understand the reason this is asked. This question can be answered in a variety of ways. Some may say that cloud computing doesn’t affect the developer in any way, while others will say developers need to totally revamp their skill set to cope with the new landscape proffered by cloud computing. The truth, as always, is somewhere in the middle.

Ex-Sun Scientists Build Cloud Boxes around IBM Servers

The racks and racks and racks of commodity servers that make the Web 2.0 world and now the cloud possible are really lousy at it. They're slow, underutilized, don't scale worth a hoot, eat power and space, and now they're multi-core. They need extensive data partitioning, application-level mapping, caching, replication/recovery and load balancing.

Future of Block Storage in the Cloud

I had the opportunity to attend Cloud Computing Conference and Expo last week in the Big Apple. I had a very specific objective: To determine what Cloud Computing really was and, more important, what the future of block storage in the cloud was. I was looking to have a one-on-one with Amazon's CTO Dr. Vogels, IBM's Cloud CTO Kloeckner, and, of course, Sun's Cloud SVP Dave Douglas, which unfortunately did not happen but I believe I was able to grasp all of the essentials I needed, in the three days I was there, to address all of my questions.

Deploying GlassFish v2 Virtualization in the Solaris Container

The Solaris Container typically can be categorized as an operating-system virtualization, which means the virtualization is done by enabling multiple isolated and secured systems in one physical server (operating system for operating system). The Solaris Resource Management and Zones are the basic functions that form the Solaris Container.

The Risks of Over-Virtualization

The computing industry goes in cycles. The latest trend, growing in buzz over the past year, is server consolidation aided by virtualization software. Virtualization software for a computer allows a single machine to behave as though it were many different, separate computing systems; each virtualized instance behaves almost identically to an independent physical machine. Using virtualization software, a roomful of servers can be consolidated onto a single physical box (provided it's powerful enough). Pundits claim this trend is cyclical because it's returning us to the old days of a single large, powerful computer (a la the mainframe) running all of the tasks in an organization. Although the modern consolidated, virtualized server is unlikely to look anything like the old mainframes, it's instructive to examine the virtualization trend in light of this mainframe comparison to see if there are any lessons to be learned.

Using Virtual Sockets To Fix Software Broken by Firewalls

A character on the TV show 'L.A. Law' once said, 'It was the 60s. Safe sex meant keeping the parking brake on.' In the early days of public networks security carried a similar sense of urgency. In fact, the network was its own best defense. One of the authors remembers accommodating a colleague by spending an afternoon plotting the hops, gateways, and contorted syntax necessary to send an e-mail from Brooklyn to Michigan. (How many computer scientists does it take to send an e-mail?)

Cassatt Delivers Unique Automation and Virtualization Solution for Enterprise Applications

Typical enterprise IT environments have as much as 90% of their hardware and software resources sitting idle at any given time, in anticipation of usage spikes. The Cassatt software, called Collage, creates a dynamic, virtual pool of resources that business applications can draw from, using existing software, servers, and networks. Cassatt then uses goal-driven automation to manage and optimize these resources. The result is ?service level automation?: Cassatt enables IT departments to deliver the application service levels to support and grow business ? even under tight budget restrictions ? by automatically leveraging previously wasted computing resources.
