Steadying ‘Information Optimization’ on a Moving Walkway

Ask any technology evangelist worth their salt roughly when the ‘next big thing’ is likely to arrive and they will typically say about five-years from now. It’s a safe bet; so-called ‘paradigm shifts’ in technology tend to occur roughly every half decade – or at least they have for the last quarter century or so.
The pressure that results from constantly evolving technology shifts has a direct impact upon us as users and, very crucially, the data we consume, manipulate and interact with beneath the innovation curve.
Although innovation is great and we all enjoy product development, being able to optimize information across the various forms of data we touch is becoming more complex. This complexity is then compounded and exacerbated given the constant forward momentum produced by subsequent innovation waves.

End-User Experience Management Drives ROI

Enterprise CFOs are taking an increasingly active role in managing the IT decision making process. As a result, IT professionals need to be prepared to quickly show how innovative technology investments equate to real business value. According to a recent industry report, only 5 percent of CIOs have the power to authorize IT investments. That same study reports that IT departments are now, more than ever, reporting directly to the CFO (42 percent) as opposed to the 33 percent reporting to the CEO. A company can’t stay competitive and productive without the right tools, technology and infrastructure. And, today’s CIOs and IT leaders need the approval of the finance department, which means technology investments need to be more tightly coupled and aligned to company goals and business value.

Comprehensive Communications Platforms Disrupt the Enterprise Video Market

When I look back on the video communications industry in 2010, I note a marked shift among our customers toward a “single solution” model. There are literally hundreds of manufacturers delivering video streaming, video on-demand (VoD), and digital signage solutions in the marketplace. Add to that the several manufacturers delivering solutions compatible with H.323 video conferencing and for technology buyers, it’s just too much. For companies that are looking to maximize the use of video communications, it’s come down to the fact that there are too many vendors and technologies to manage. Now, more than ever, our clients are looking for one comprehensive solution that effectively brings all of these components together. While there are established vendors including Cisco and Polycom that can provide all the capabilities, only a few vendors, such as BurstPoint Networks, have integrated it all in one comprehensive platform. There are a whole lot more that have some catching up to do.

Web 2.0 Interconnectivity

In the recent TechWise blog PaaS & the cloud Continuum we discussed the structure and phenomenon of Cloud computing. There really are two technological evolutions occurring simultaneously. One is the movement of storage and services to the cloud and the other is the push to interconnect these services. This shift to increased interconnectivity forms the basis of Web 2.0
read more

Enterprise Mashups: The New Face of Your SOA

Enterprise mashups, one of the hottest Web 2.0 technologies today, could impact your SOA in a very positive way. But are you ready for them? How does an SOA architect prepare for this dynamic technology? Do you know what a mashup is and what value it brings to an enterprise? Can you distinguish between a consumer mashup and an enterprise mashup?

JavaScript Hijacking: Only 1 Out 12 Popular AJAX Frameworks Prevents It

Although the term "Web 2.0" does not have a rigorous definition, it is commonly used in at least two ways. First, it refers to Web applications that encourage social interaction or collective contribution for a common good. Second, it refers to Web programming techniques that lead to a rich and user-friendly interface. These techniques sometimes go by the name Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX), though many implementations don't use XML at all.

SOA: Preparing for Mashups

It's important to remember that there is a huge resource being created on the Web these days in terms of both services and content. This includes access to SaaS applications (that are better than their enterprise-bound counterparts), service marketplaces, and even mash-able applications that you can mix and match with other Web 2.0 applications / APIs / services or enterprise applications / services to quickly solve business problems.

Mashups Accelerating and SOA Is Along for the Ride

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that mashups are moving from things that are conceptual and fun, to things that are productive and businesslike. The fact is, developers are leveraging mashups to solve all sorts of business problems these days, and the speed to production and the value of these little applications is compelling.

AJAX, RIA, SOA & Web 2.0 Mashups - Mash What?

It's what you don't see about the emerging Web that has everyone excited these days. Namely, it's the powerful application programming interfaces, or APIs. APIs are nothing new and have been traditionally cryptic and difficult to use. However, the advent of Web services along with the notion of mashups has changed the way we consider and leverage APIs going forward.

The Convergence of Web 2.0 Mashups & SOA

Enterprise mashups - the convergence of Web 2.0 mashups and service-oriented architecture (SOA) - can create a world of opportunities for enterprises to come up with internal and customer-facing self-service, composite and 'situational' applications. These applications can be created just-in-time by empowered enterprise business users and by simply combining SOA-enabled information sources and services or SOBAs (service-oriented business application) on the intranet and Internet.

Why AJAX and Enterprise Mashups?

More and more enterprises are looking into how they can benefit from mashups to improve their business. Unfortunately, many of the best-known mashups today are more consumer oriented. Many mashup examples do not pay justice to the real enterprise value of mashups and they certainly don't explain why mashups are something every company needs to start using.
