BEA Co-Founder Wants to Make Biz Apps Social

BEA co-founder Alfred Chuang, who was running the joint when Oracle swooped in and bought it three years ago for $8.5 billion, has raised a $12.6 million A round led by Andreessen Horowitz for a new start-up called Magnet Systems. Magnet’s got a cloud-ified development platform called WIN, short for Workplace Interaction Network, that’s supposed to be used to build and deploy so-called enterprise social applications that work on Amazon and let business people connect and collaborate the way the hoi polloi does on Facebook and Twitter, automatically linking up existing social networking connections.

Oracle Wednesday put out GlassFish Server 3.1, delivering on the roadmap laid out at last year’s JavaOne and adding new high-availability features in the areas of load balancing, failover, state management and centralized administration. There’s supposed to be a 34% improvement in high-availability performance over GlassFish 2.1.1. As the reference implementation for Java EE, GlassFish Server is the proving grounds for the upcoming Java EE 7. Oracle says GlassFish complements its WebLogic Server 11g, designed to run the broader portfolio of Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g and large-scale enterprise applications.

Cloud companies cast a nasty pall over Wall Street Wednesday when they all seemed to drop simultaneously. Reuters said the retreat started when Equinix, the big hosting company, said it had to cut prices to keep long-term customers after it acquired Switch & Data earlier this year and lowered its revenue guidance. Shares in Citrix, Saavis, Rackspace, NetSuite, VMware, Terremark, Red Hat, Akamai, Salesforce.com, F5, Islion, Teradata, CommVault, Tibco and Radwqare were all badly bruised by the flight.

Oracle ‘Clarifies’ Its President’s Statements

What are the chances that Chuck Phillips, the president of Oracle, the ex-Morgan Stanley guy involved in the company’s many acquisitions, doesn’t know whether Oracle will “probably double what we’ve spent on acquisitions in the last five years,” which is what he reportedly told a Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference last week, adding “if things hold up, we could easily do that.” Well, Oracle “clarified” Mr. Chuck’s statements the next day saying that it “does not have a five-year acquisition budget. We don’t even have a one-year acquisition budget. While it is highly unlikely that we will spend anything approaching $70 billion in five years, we will be opportunistic and, if market conditions warrant, we will buy additional companies that further our strategic goals and address our customers’ needs.”

The 42-page suit is a replay of Oracle’s still-unresolved suit against SAP, which, to its regret, bought TomorrowNow, another third-party discount maintenance operation started by Ravin.

By 2014, citizen developers will build at least 25 percent of new business applications, according to Gartner, Inc. Gartner said that this advance should both enable end users and free up IT resources. However, analysts warned that IT organizations that fail to capitalize on the opportunities that citizen development presents will find themselves unable to respond to rapidly changing market forces and customer preferences. Gartner defines a citizen developer as a user operating outside of the scope of enterprise IT and its governance who creates new business applications for consumption by others either from scratch or by composition.

EC Wrong, Wrong, Wrong – and Sloppy to Boot: Intel

Intel’s appeal to the Court of First Instance of the European Commission’s monopoly abuse decision against it claims that the EC didn’t prove that it hammered AMD into the ground with its discounts. According to a summary of the otherwise sealed appeal published over the weekend in the Official Journal of the European Union, Intel says that the EC made an error of law in assuming that its discounts were per se abusive simply because they were conditional.
