Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Nokia Reaffirms Commitment to Wireless Java In San Francisco
JavaOne Keynote Address to Will Detail Nokia's Vision for Next-Generation Mobile Java

Nokia will demonstrates its leading commitment to mobile software development and advancing open end-to-end mobile Java platform architecture in the mobile space here at the 2005 JavaOne conference in San Francisco this week.

Nokia's global developer support program, Forum Nokia, is participating as a Platinum Sponsor in its fifth consecutive year of sponsorship support for the event. During the weeklong JavaOne conference, Nokia's Java experts will participate in at least eleven presentations exploring developer issues related to mobile platforms, application development and next-generation technologies.

Nokia Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President Pertti Korhonen (pictured) will deliver a General Session keynote address on Wednesday, June 29, from 8:30 to 9:15 AM, detailing Nokia's vision for the evolution of the Java Platform in the mobile space.

In his keynote speech, Korhonen will outline new opportunities for developers in the mobile middleware market, describe improvements that will be realized from soon-to-be released Java Specification Requests (JSRs) under the Nokia-supported Mobile Service Architecture (MSA) initiative, and reveal exciting developments in multiplayer gaming for the Java platform.

In addition, Korhonen will address the anticipated benefits to the entire mobile ecosystem inherent in advancing the next generation of common, open standards-based, Java platform for mobile development and deployment for consumer and enterprise applications and services. He will also discuss Nokia's offerings in advanced tools and SDKs for developers looking to build exciting and profitable mobile applications for the Java platform of today and tomorrow.

A Nokia senior manager who joined the company in 1986, Korhonen is uniquely positioned to address Nokia's strategies for the evolution of Java in the mobile space. Prior to his appointment as CTO in 2004, Korhonen served as Executive Vice President of the Nokia Mobile Software unit and is the holder of five patents, as well as MSci degree from the University of Oulu in Finland.

Nokia's vision for the evolution of the Java platform in the mobile space is being presented against the backdrop of a worldwide surge in the deployment of Java services and content via Java technology-enabled devices. Nokia estimates that by the end of December 2005, Nokia will have cumulatively shipped well over 300 million Java technology-enabled devices based on their Series 40, Series 60 and Series 80 developer platforms worldwide. With hundreds of millions of Java technology-enabled mobile devices available and over 45,000 mobile applications for the Java platform on the market today, Nokia estimates approximately 23 million mobile Java applications are being downloaded to mobile devices each month during 2005.
