Univa Expands Cloud Management Capabilities With Planning and Analytics Product
By: Business Wire
Jul. 20, 2009 10:36 AM
Univa UD, a leading provider of software solutions for enabling dynamic IT environments, today announced a new analytics product, UniPlan, to ensure optimal utilization of expensive commercial applications in cluster or cloud computing environments. UniPlan simulates the project workload for a specific application and then performs detailed scenario analyses to identify potential bottlenecks or performance gaps. With the data provided by UniPlan, users can determine ideal application utilization profiles and resource allocation or license purchase decisions to derive the greatest possible value from these costly applications. For example, UniPlan can simulate adding or removing a single application license on a private cloud to illustrate the effect on the workload, the project and the overall utilization of the system and applications. “Technical computing applications like those used in electronic design automation (EDA) or industrial manufacturing can be extremely expensive, so it’s critical for users to find ways to optimize their utilization,” explains Gary Tyreman, Univa VP and GM of Infrastructure. “With UniPlan, application users can deeply examine realistic scenarios and methodically determine the right actions to take to ensure their high-cost, high-value applications are always running as efficiently as possible – whether they are running on a single cluster or across a private or public cloud.” UniPlan is powered by WorkloadAnalyzer™ from Runtime Design Automation (RTDA), a leader in computing resource management software for monitoring, managing, and optimizing the utilization of software licenses and CPU resources. The industry's only simulation-based workload analysis and compute farm/cluster planning tool, WorkloadAnalyzer takes historical workloads from existing licensing monitoring or workload management tools such as Sun Grid Engine, Platform LSF, or RTDA's Network Computer (NC) and then models a particular compute farm or cluster configuration to simulate workload over this model. “By utilizing UniPlan with WorkloadAnalyzer, IT managers and application users can take the guesswork out of HPC infrastructure planning,” says Frank Bailey, Vice President, Sales at RTDA. “Companies who want to stay competitive can’t afford to rely on intuition or homegrown planning spreadsheets. If you’re thinking of adding CPUs or cutting licenses, you need to know exactly which jobs will be affected and by how much – and what the overall impact will be on deadlines and expenses.” With the data and insights gained from employing UniPlan, companies can make more informed planning decisions such as whether to buy more hardware or software, whether to expand an external cloud footprint, how to minimize overall wait time and maximize throughput, and what the impact might be of a personnel change. UniPlan is available as a standalone product or as part of Univa’s UniCloud Enterprise software bundle. For more information on these products, go to: http://www.univaud.com/hpc/products/.
