Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

A Billion Java Cards Served
Axalto CEO Joins Sun's McNealy to Note Milestone

Axalto CEO Olivier Piou joined Sun’s Scott McNealy during his keynote at the JavaOne Conference to commemorate reaching the one billion Java Cards milestone.

They discussed how Java card technology came into being, how it re-shaped the smart card market and facilitated Axalto’s growth into becoming the leader in intelligent smart cards, where the technology is being used and why it is so attractive to so many different market sectors.

Mr. Piou stated that this year Axalto alone will deliver 400 million smart cards, more than twice as many as the number of PCs that will ship this year.  He also predicts that while it took ten years to reach one billion Java cards, it will take less than three years to ship the next billion.

McNealy noted that Sun "did not (originally) foresee Java Cards" as the phenomenon they were to become, while Piou pointed out that “Java enabled us to re-shape the smart card market.  When we adopted it the market was dominated by a few players who were fanatics about proprietary systems.  What Java brought to us was really multi-application and openness.”
