Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Advanced Vitesse 10 Gigabit Ethernet LAN/WAN PHY Sets New Standards for Compact SFP+-Compliant Transceiver

Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (Pink Sheets:VTSS) has extended its offering of industry-leading VSC8486 10 Gbps XAUI to XFI LAN/WAN transceivers with a highly integrated, next-generation device, the VSC8486-11. Featuring synchronous Ethernet clocking, the VSC8486-11 delivers superior high-speed signals for XFP and SFP+ module-based Carrier Ethernet equipment supporting 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE), 10G Fibre Channel (10 GFC), and WIS (OC-192/STM-64) network applications. The high-performance, single 1.2V volt supply and low power of the VSC8486-11 transceiver make it ideal for single, dual, and high density line card applications.

The demand for high-performance transceivers increases as communications traffic continues to grow despite the global economic slow down. Annual shipment of 10G ports jumped nearly 80- to 90-percent in calendar 2008 to nearly two million ports. Industry analysts are predicting another increase in 2010 to as high as three to five million ports, with expected growth in terms of port counts by 2013 to be 10 fold. In response to this market growth, the VSC8486-11 has been specifically designed to fit in a 144-pin chip scale package (FCBGA) allowing Vitesse to stay ahead of the price curve in support of customer requirements for aggressive price points when designing for today’s 10 GbE market.

“The VSC8486-11 capabilities, dimensions and competitive cost make it the perfect solution for evolving metro Ethernet networks, enterprise networks, campus environments and central office connectivity,” said Koby Reshef, vice president of marketing, PacketLight Networks. “Collaborating with Vitesse and using the VSC8486-11 transceiver has made our suite of WDM solutions even more robust, providing customers with a distinguished solution that meets the emerging needs of metro Ethernet, Triple Play and enterprise data sharing applications.”

Unlike other devices with high-power electronic dispersion compensation, the VSC8486-11 boasts Vitesse’s low-power enhanced FlexEQ™ architecture with superior circuitry which compensates for connector and channel losses. This allows the device to be INF-8077i XFP and SFF-8431 SFP+ module specification compliant. The architecture also provides fast lock times and low latency required for today’s Carrier Ethernet networks. In LAN mode, the VSC8486-11 meets and exceeds the Ethernet IEEE 802.3ae, and Fibre Channel T11 10 GFC standards. Additionally, the device is fully compliant with the SONET jitter specification defined by Bellcore GR253 in WAN mode. The new VSC8486-11 has a typical power dissipation of 750mW in the LAN mode and 850mW in the WAN mode.

Part of the VSC8486 family, the new VSC8486-11 with synchronous Ethernet clocking can be used with either XFP or SFP+ optical modules making it well-suited for Carrier Ethernet line card applications. To simplify circuit card layout, the XAUI lanes can be swapped or inverted. The XAUI interface includes pre-emphasis for the transmitter, equalization for the received signal, and de-skew logic to compensate for propagation-delay differences. It extracts the clock and the data, and performs physical-coding sub-layer (PCS) functions such as 8b/10b coding and 64b/66b coding. Along with a WIS layer for WAN applications, forward error correction (FEC) is available for greater reach over fiber distances.

“With numerous design wins, Vitesse has shipped the VSC8486 product family to a variety of customers worldwide and we continue to see increasing demand for our widely adopted physical layer products in the marketplace,” said Raymond Fontayne, senior product marketing manager for Vitesse. “Ideal for use in existing and future designs, the new VSC8486-11 derivative continues to raise the bar for performance and cost-effectiveness while successfully extending the availability of this popular product well into the future.”

Availability and Pricing

Available in a 13 x 13mm package, the VSC8486-11 is in full production. Pricing is available for customers upon request.
