Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Opportunities and Enterprise Mobility?
Thoughts and findings - 3 of 5

This is the third in a series of five initial articles, in which I'm going to put my thoughts and findings on the subject of Enteprise Mobility. For this article I've decided to discuss the Opportunities that lie in front of companies that undertake an Enterprise Mobility Strategy.

As part of making 'Mobility for the Masses', that I mentioned in my last article, the Information Worker (example here) has become a key mobile worker. The oppertunites to be gained here are...

  • Ability to mobilize workflow
  • Enabling transparency of business processes
  • Zero latency of the above
  • Agility of the worker with competitive data at their fingertips... anytime & anywhere

Opportunities

Many critical processes are part of business process/workflow such as Purchase order requisition, HR requisition, Expense approvals, Intranet notifications, Timesheets, Tracking KPIs and CRM sales activity. If these business processes/workflows are not completed in a timely manner, productivity can be impacted. Here is an example of the old way...

  • Mobile field worker sends approval request
  • Manager at airport, gets text email
  • Manager has to wait until online at the hotel to approve request
  • Mobile field worker returns next day to complete repair

More travel, another day of the workers time... and more importantly another day of the customers time

Mobilizing Workflow
Now mobilizing the process/workflow transparently, creates a whole new way...

  • Mobile field worker sends approval request
  • Manager at airport, gets text email and instantly approves request, no longer having to wait until he is online at the hotel
  • Mobile field worker receives the approval and proceeds with repair

More productivity from the worker & great service to the customer

With consumer led devices being adopted in the Enterprise, through employees being allowed to bring devices into the Enterprise, businesses can bring consumer lessons into their company as well, such as App Stores for example.

Other possible oppertunities for Enterprise Mobility, include mCommerce, though there needs to be either a small eco-system with high transactions, or a larger eco-system with small transactions, to make sense.

I agree that being able to take advantage of a BYO phone (bring your own phone) strategy is key to successful enterprise mobility. Securely and inexpensively making that phone a part of the corporate communications ecosystem - making it so the device (1) carries the deskphone number (so users are not juggling personal and business numbers), (2) integrates with enterprise social networking productivity apps (Mobile Presence and Status) and (3) is under IT control -- is key to being successful with your enterprise mobility strategy.
