Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Michael Dell Endorses Citrix Desktop Virtualization Play
Says XenDesktop 4 Aligns Well With Dell Flexible Computing and Windows 7

Last week Citrix announced a sweeping product launch aimed at Virtualizing Desktops for any type of user or device. More than 70 new features are included in the new XenDesktop 4, including the ability to host Desktop VM's on Servers ( VDI ) or PC's online and offline. Users will be able to securely access their apps and desktops from any device ranging from Office or Home PC's to NetBooks, to Thin Clients to even iPhones. Another significant component of the announcement is the inclusion of Citrix XenApp application Virtualization so IT shops now have the flexibility to deliver apps and desktops optimized for the user and use case.

This announcement has gotten the attention of many of the industries leaders including Michael Dell. “Dell’s Flexible Computing vision aligns well with Citrix’s desktop virtualization strategy.  Citrix XenDesktop 4, as part of Dell’s Flexible Computing offering, gives our customers the flexibility to pick the best type of virtual desktop solution for their needs,” said Michael Dell, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Dell. “Given the upcoming Windows 7 refresh cycle, we’re expecting many of our customers to begin assessing desktop virtualization as the industry moves to anytime, anywhere desktop access.”

In addition to unifying Desktop and Application Virtualization some of the highlighted features include support for remote Flash video display including high fidelity audio, 3D support for remote CAD,  and USB redirection for broad peripheral support. These are just some of the capabilities of the Citrix HDX Technology which can be viewed in more detail here. New pricing has also been announced that can save existing Citrix customers up to 80% when they expand to enable Desktop Virtualization. For new customers the price ranges from $75 ( VDI only ), $225 per user for Enterprise and $350 per user for Platinum XenDesktop 4. The availability of the new offering is set for 11/16 but there is a version available in Tech Preview now.

Citrix is holding a  Virtual event on 10/20 for those interested in learning more about VDI and XenDesktop 4. The interactive event will be staffed by Architects, Industry Analysts and Partners answering questions and sharing their knowledge about Desktop Virtualization.
