Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Lightweight SOA for Rapid SaaS Deployment
Benefits of Delivering 3D Software as a Service -- a New Presentation From EON Reality

Saas Journal on Ulitzer

As part of its continual push to embrace state-of-the-art technology, EON Reality is proud to join the ranks of top software architects of the industry at Microsoft's The Architecture Journal (October 2009) with their presentation on "Lightweight SOA for Rapid SaaS Development." In this presentation, EON Reality's Technical Director, Gabriyel Wong from Singapore explains the benefits of delivering 3D software as a service, challenges that his team faced when developing the EON Human community site and their approach to deliver a scalable solution by using a service-oriented architecture within a short turnaround time.

The most exciting part of technology is perhaps to see it being realized in imaginative ways. Internet technology has taken giant leaps and bounds, challenging the traditional desktop computing paradigm and closing the gap towards a truly thin client software model. While the talk-of-the-town on SOA and SaaS usually revolves around enterprise level software and web applications, it is hardly traceable for any employment of this technology for interactive 3D computer graphics application.

The limitations from a client-server model are both fundamental and perceivable when it comes to interactive 3D applications running over the Internet -- speed. "In this article, we describe an architecture which we have designed to capitalize on existing scalable cloud facilities such as elastic computing, database management, queue and payment services for deploying online 3D face generation software in a social-networking environment. We present the challenges of virtualizing computer graphics functions over the cloud and the issues related to managing data persistency for optimal usage experience," said Gabriyel Wong. The insights from this article will benefit the readers tremendously on the architectural aspects pertaining to usage of SOA in a refreshing setting (3D computer graphics) and the exploitation of existing cloud computing infrastructure in terms of scalability and cost which are usually key business consideration factors.
