Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

ACS To Provide North Carolina Turnpike Authority with First Roadside Toll Collection System

Affiliated Computer Services, Inc. (NYSE: ACS) today announced it will provide the North Carolina Turnpike Authority (NCTA) with its first roadside toll collection system (RTCS) and related statewide toll back office system (BOS) under two contracts, valued at about $22 million.

ACS will design, install and maintain an advanced electronic RTCS in 64 automated tolling lanes at 11 tolling points as a part of the Triangle Expressway toll project in Wake and Durham counties. ACS will also provide a toll customer and revenue management back office system which will support the Triangle Expressway toll project.

ACS’ unique toll system design provides a fully automated and accountable all-electronic toll (AET) revenue collection system for the multi-lane Triangle Expressway tollroad without using toll booths. This innovative open road toll design automatically tracks and tolls vehicles using overhead gantry-based equipment and roadway sensors. The system is based on the use of car-mounted Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-based transponders and camera-based license plate reading systems.

The design is highly cost-efficient, fully accountable and promotes a safer traveling experience to help reduce vehicle emissions. The technology for both the Triangle Expressway roadside toll collection system and the back office system is based on ACS’ proprietary VECTOR toll system design. This design already has been proven in hundreds of other open-road toll systems throughout the United States.

“Toll systems are a key tool to provide alternative roads and bridges with the benefits of reducing traffic congestion, reducing travel time and improving motorist safety,” said Ken Philmus, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of ACS Transportation Solutions Group. “Using user fees to assist in the funding of the Triangle Expressway is an essential element of North Carolina’s ongoing strategic program to maximize mobility across the state by providing efficient and safe alternative transportation systems.”

ACS offers a wide range of advanced transportation solutions, including toll collection, airport parking, public transit agency, and car park operator solutions that rationalize and automate revenue collection. ACS solutions can be seamlessly integrated into existing environments and are geared for the requirements of the future. ACS’ toll collection system is installed in over 1800 tolling lanes across America and our toll back office systems process over 50 percent of all electronic toll collection (ETC) transactions in the U.S. making it the nationwide leader.
