Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Persystent Software Welcomes Record Number of Healthcare Customers in a Down Economy

Persystent Software, developers of Persystent Suite, the fastest PC recovery solution on the market, today announced that 2009 was the company’s most successful year yet in serving the healthcare sector, welcoming a record number of new customers from hospitals and health systems, medical practices and health service providers throughout the U.S. According to the software provider, the all-in-one repair, imaging and compliance features found in Persystent Suite are particularly well suited to IT departments in healthcare because they target the pain points that are inherent in hospital settings, including:

  • Exceptionally low ratio of IT staff to PC end users
  • Added pressure to meet HIPAA initiatives to protect patient records
  • 24/7 computer uptime requirements

According to Katherine Wattwood, VP of Product Development at Persystent Software, “In few sectors is the ratio of IT staff to end users more challenging than in healthcare. Situations where a handful of IT technicians are supporting upwards of a thousand PC end users is not unusual.” Wattwood adds, “With odds like that, doing everything possible to reduce the load on IT help desks is essential.”

Ms. Wattwood points out that a large majority of the calls IT departments receive are application related, often requiring a desktop visit from an IT technician and the complete re-imaging of a machine back to day one factory settings. “With Persystent loaded on a PC, it just takes a simple reboot to restore the system’s application and O/S files and return the PC to a working state. In 30 seconds, an end user is back up and running with their familiar favorites, profiles and settings preserved.”

Unlike other disaster recovery software products, with Persystent Suite, no network connection is required and a healthy O/S is not needed to engage the repair tool.

According to Persystent Software, another reason customers in healthcare are choosing Persystent Suite is that it provides another line of defense in their efforts to safeguard access to patient records, which can be especially challenging in open, multi-user computer environments, like nurses’ stations and kiosks. “The more people using a machine, the greater the risk of corrupted, changed or missing O/S and application files that can compromise access to patient data if an application doesn’t work,” says Wattwood. “Our software solution enables IT to schedule automated PC repair or repair on demand to remove viruses, malware, spyware, unauthorized programs, and the like. This reduces and, in most cases, eliminates PC downtime, which could be life threatening in an emergency situation.”

Conversely, IT can also be assured that select healthcare workstations meet corporate IT compliance standards, which also provides an added layer of security to vulnerable PCs. In other words, if an unauthorized application is downloaded, it can be immediately removed upon reboot with no intervention needed from the IT staff, automatically controlling damage.

Persystent also acknowledges that with PCs located in virtually every hospital setting, from administrative offices, to emergency rooms, to patient rooms, being able to get them back up and running in 30 seconds with a single reboot is a big competitive advantage for the company -- one they plan to aggressively capitalize on in 2010 and beyond.

In addition to repair and compliance features, Persystent Suite also enables provisioning of new PCs and O/S migrations. In early 2010, Persystent plans the release of Persystent Suite 4.5, with Windows 7 compatibility. This release will enable the migration of XP and Vista to the new O/S while offering the fastest PC repair capability once machines are upgraded.

Healthcare sector organizations currently using Persystent Suite include:

Bayfront Medical Center
Brooks Health System
Clin-Path Associates
Community Memorial Hospital
DCH Health System
Invacare
Jupiter Medical Center
Lifelink
MaxIT Healthcare
Monongahela Valley Hospital
SonoNet
South Nassau Community Hospital
Taylor Regional Hospital
University Physicians Healthcare
VA Medical Centers (Loma Linda and Long Beach)
