F5 Improves Customers’ IT Infrastructure Agility with BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager Virtual Edition
New virtual version of BIG-IP LTM increases deployment flexibility, offering customers freedom to combine physical & virtual app

F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the global leader in Application Delivery Networking (ADN), today announced availability of a free trial version of its new virtual appliance, the BIG-IP® Local Traffic Manager (LTM) Virtual Edition (VE). The combination of virtual and physical Application Delivery Controllers (ADCs) is a major milestone in delivering on F5’s vision for dynamic IT infrastructure. The free trial is now available at http://www.f5.com/trial/.

With the addition of BIG-IP LTM VE to its market-leading family of ADC solutions, F5 extends its unique architectural approach for application and data delivery to include both physical and virtual appliances. This release gives developers and architects a new, efficient, and effective tool for modeling ADC deployments. The free trial version is downloadable online, reducing both the time and cost of evaluations.

"The Application Delivery Network is the foundation for a flexible architecture, and F5’s advanced ADCs are the enabling solution that allows organizations to deliver services dynamically," said Erik Giesa, VP of Product Management and Product Marketing at F5. "Now IT departments can shorten their testing time by simply spinning up a virtual BIG-IP to immediately begin testing on different configurations, iControl® and iRules® programs, and other variables with confidence that the test results will match live operation of a physical BIG-IP appliance in their production network."

As part of today’s news, F5 is also announcing the availability of the BIG-IP LTM 'Essentials Training Class' as a web-based training course. This online course is available to anyone at no charge.

Details

  • Developers can easily create and test application delivery solutions developed using F5’s programming language, iRules, as well as management and automation solutions that take advantage of the iControl API, F5’s standards-based control plane.
  • Unlike other application delivery virtual appliance solutions, BIG-IP LTM VE is part of an overarching application delivery architecture. It is designed to work in context and cooperation with a network of physical and virtual ADC appliances, and with many different server virtualization technologies.
  • Users of the BIG-IP LTM VE trial have free access to F5’s online support portal, and to community support through DevCentralSM, to help further accelerate innovative solutions.
  • F5 is now offering free BIG-IP LTM web-based training as a flexible learning tool to help users get the most from F5 solutions. More information about this free F5 resource is located at www.f5.com/training-support/global-training/web-based-training/.
  • F5 plans to offer a version of BIG-IP LTM VE with production-level throughput rates, as well as an evaluation version with higher rate limits for more in-depth testing, in the first half of CY 2010. Users will experience seamless transfer from the test environment and configurations, iRules, etc., to their production BIG-IP devices.
  • The BIG-IP LTM VE is part of F5’s overall Enterprise Cloud Architecture strategy that began back in 2007 with the introduction of F5’s unique Clustered Multiprocessing (CMP) technology. This strategy and vision was recently bolstered by the new BIG-IP Edge Gateway and BIG-IP Access Policy Manager products, which can serve as application access control points for internal and external enterprise cloud services. These solutions simplify and unify application access control while ensuring high levels of quality of service.

Supporting Quotes

“While application architects and developers don’t necessarily care about the final implementation of ADC services, they require a flexible infrastructure that can easily be integrated into the application development and deployment process, and can adapt quickly to business operations and opportunities,” said Mark Fabbi, VP and Distinguished Analyst at Gartner. “Soft ADCs give customers the flexibility to deploy ADCs in whole new ways to test, develop, and integrate more tightly into an overall Enterprise Cloud Architecture.”

"Our overarching objective at Trace3 is to help businesses do more with less, and virtualization and cloud computing offer clear ways to accomplish this," said John Pfaff, President at Trace3. "Our enterprise customers are ready to offload some of their infrastructure to the cloud, and a virtual ADC is essential to help them get to the next step. F5’s combined approach of physical and virtual BIG-IP solutions provide all the building blocks to do this effectively. In addition, many of our existing BIG-IP customers don’t have special-purpose lab gear, so the virtual ADC will be a powerful tool for them to run new configurations, test iRules, add new features, etc., in a safe environment."

"Byer California uses VMware and BIG-IP to run our virtualized infrastructure that supports a variety of applications, including Oracle, email, and others, on virtual machines hosted on HP Blade Servers," said Mandar Ghosalkar, Applications Infrastructure Manager at Byer California. "F5's virtual BIG-IP LTM fits well with Byer’s IT strategy for several reasons. First, this will enable us to test new solutions in an isolated environment and then easily transfer them to our production BIG-IP devices. Second, it should save valuable time and resources by eliminating the need to purchase and rack additional devices, helping us deploy applications faster."
