Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Exclusive License for Multimedia Infrastructure Patents from the University of Southern California Shoah Foundation Institute to be Offered at ICAP Ocean Tomo’s Live Auction March 25th in San Francisco

ICAP Ocean Tomo, the intellectual property brokerage division of ICAP plc (IAP.L), will offer for sale an exclusive license to a significant portfolio of intellectual property assets held by the University of Southern California Shoah Foundation Institute at its Live Auction on March 25, 2010 in San Francisco. The intellectual property portfolio for license is comprised of 11 issued United States Patents. Essential information regarding this Lot is available online at http://icapoceantomo.com/item-for-sale/digital-multimedia-library-cataloging-search-license.

Current multimedia systems are constrained by an architecture which maintains all the components on a single hardware platform with hardwired interfaces, rendering them platform specific. Another major problem is the lack of an efficient cataloging system for storing multimedia data in a searchable database allowing for data retrieval on demand. These problems with existing technology solutions result in the inability to structure data in a cohesive form for further analysis.

The technology from the University of Southern California addresses all these issues. The patents available for licensing pertain to optimized systems used for capturing, storing and cataloging multimedia data. The technology in the patent portfolio solves pervasive multimedia management issues by providing an efficient cataloging mechanism with generalized interfaces so that system components supplied by multiple vendors can be interconnected. The technology also provides generic methods of cataloging used to streamline multimedia data in a cohesive form for analysis. The technology is currently employed by the University’s Shoah Foundation Institute for Visual History and Education.

“The exclusive license being sold in this lot will be of interest to all companies which are involved in designing, using or selling database management systems including software companies, computer hardware manufacturers, and search engines,” said Dean Becker of ICAP Ocean Tomo, “and should be extremely valuable for companies looking to strengthen their multimedia search and DRM intellectual property portfolios today.”

The technology underlying the exclusive license that is being sold has been cited as prior art in patents by numerous firms including Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), Sony Corporation (NYSE: SNE) and Oracle Corporation (NASDAQ: ORCL).

About the USC Shoah Foundation Institute

Since 1994, the USC Shoah Foundation Institute has used technology based on their patents set to catalog, preserve, and provide access to more than 100,000 hours of video, as well as over one million images and text documents. These systems and patents, developed before the advent of video and searching on the web, provided the USC Shoah Foundation Institute the map for enabling the use of their large multimedia archives. These patent sets will now be made available to others for use.

Established in 1994 by Steven Spielberg to collect and preserve the testimonies of survivors and other witnesses of the Holocaust, the USC Shoah Foundation Institute maintains one of the largest video digital libraries in the world: nearly 52,000 video testimonies in 32 languages and from 56 countries. The Institute is part of the College of Letters, Arts & Sciences at the University of Southern California; its mission is to overcome prejudice, intolerance, and bigotry—and the suffering they cause—through the educational use of the Institute’s visual history testimonies.
