Exclusive Q&As Cloud Platforms: The Natural and Primary Choice for App Development
An Exclusive Q&A with Objectivity, Inc.’s Thomas Krafft
By: Liz McMillan
May. 20, 2010 08:00 AM
"Cloud computing today is accessible not only to enterprise customers, but individual developers as well," observed Thomas Krafft, Director of Marketing and Demand Generation at Objectivity, Inc. in this post-show Q&A with Cloud Expo Chair Jeremy Geelan. Krafft also noted that "anyone with an idea and technical skill can utilize as much infrastructure as they want, for pennies per hour. It is truly an amazing time for web-facing technology and massively distributed systems." Explore Cloud Expo Sponsorship & Exhibit Opportunities !
Cloud Computing Journal: A very general question first, about Cloud Computing itself: Surely we've heard all of this before in various forms and guises - grid computing / utility computing, etc.? What is different this time - why is everyone so convinced it will now work? Thomas Krafft: The evolution of technical expertise, advances in computer science, programming languages and integrated development environments, along with significant reductions in the cost of hardware and bandwidth, all are driving new and exciting innovation that simply was not possible just a few years ago. Cloud computing today is accessible not only to enterprise customers, but individual developers as well. For the first time, anyone with an idea and technical skill can utilize as much infrastructure as they want, for pennies per hour. It is truly an amazing time for web-facing technology and massively distributed systems that are the most likely systems and products to be developed on this generation of distributed computing platform. Cloud Computing Journal: What are the three main factors driving CIOs toward the Cloud? Krafft: The three main factors are
Cloud Computing Journal: And what are the three main barriers preventing some CIOs from moving some of the on-premise computing to the Cloud? Krafft: The three main barriers are:
Cloud Computing Journal: How does your own company's offering/s assist CIOs and organizations/companies? Krafft: As organizations consider moving their applications and systems into vast and distributed cloud computing environments, they must address the known limitations inherent in traditional relational/SQL data management technologies. Even if cloud platforms were not available, organizations today are already becoming painfully aware of any systems that require nearly constant administration and management by teams of database administrators and engineers. This is simply not a sustainable or scalable model. For cloud-based systems, it is optimal to use components that require virtually zero administrative overhead. This is exactly the kind of data management solution Objectivity, Inc. provides. Objectivity, Inc. has developed a distributed data management and persistence solution that "future proofs" and enables applications to fully utilize the cloud - not only in terms of distributed data, but by enabling virtually unlimited scalability and distributed processing of virtually any source and type of data as well. Our solution enables applications to connect to virtually unlimited instances and data sources without the need to update any code references, and without any degradation of performance caused by partitioning schemes and mapping layers normally required by traditional, relational technology. As new machines and compute nodes are added to the network, performance increases and improves in a near linear line - all with virtually zero administrative overhead required. Cloud Computing Journal: Are there other players in the Cloud ecosystem offering the same - or is your company unique? Why? Krafft: We were the first, and are still the only commercially available, distributed data management solution on the market. Our technology has been proven over many years, and is used in some of the most advanced mission-critical enterprise and government systems on the planet. Our uniquely distributed architecture allows our product, Objectivity/DB, to be easily used and deployed on virtually any distributed or cloud computing environment. Cloud Computing Journal: We hear talk of a Cloud Revolution and also of a Cloud "evolution" - either way, what kind of time span are we talking about, do you think. In other words, for how long is Cloud Computing going to exert its pull on the minds, hearts, and budgets of all involved in modern-day Enterprise IT? Krafft: The cloud is here to stay. As security and pricing continue to improve, and as software and data components supporting distributed and elastic scalability become more readily available, cloud platforms will become the natural and primary choice for the development and deployment of applications and mission-critical systems.
A Rock Star Faculty, Top Keynotes, Sessions, and Top Delegates! The growth and success of Cloud Computing will be on display at the upcoming Cloud Expo conferences and exhibitions in Prague June 21-22 and Santa Clara November 1-4. The recent Cloud Expo at the Javits Center in New York City was the largest Cloud Computing conference ever produced, more sponsors, exhibitors and delegates than all other Cloud events of the year combined!
All main layers of the Cloud ecosystem will be represented in the6th and 7th International Cloud Expo - the infrastructure players, the platform providers, and those offering applications, and they'll all be here to speak, sponsor, exhibit and network. "Cloud Expo was announced on February 24, 2007, the day the term ‘cloud computing' was coined," said Fuat Kircaali, founder and chairman of SYS-CON Events, Inc. "Cloud has become synonymous with ‘computing' and ‘software' in two short years, and this event has become the new PC Expo, Comdex, and InternetWorld of our decade. By 2012, more than 50,000 delegates per year will be attending Cloud Expo."
