Wily's Karen Jaworski Discusses Web Services Manager
Talks about SOA's Flexibility and How to Control Their Complexity
Oct. 19, 2005 08:45 PM
SOA WSJ: How does Wily provide
deep visibility into web service components? What sort of performance
increases can customers expect? What sort of uptime improvements can
they expect?
KJ: Using
Wily’s Byte Code Instrumentation technology, the Wily Web Services
Manager (WSM) solution provides 100% visibility into web service
performance without requiring any coding. Depending on your
perspective, Wily WSM can display performance metrics from the client
side, the server side or both to help determine how the client, server
and network are performing.
Wily WSM also utilizes Wily’s Blame
technology to decompose service calls into the underlying components of
a service. Not only can you see the EJB invoked by the service, but you
can also see file system I/O, JDBC calls, etc. This deep visibility
endows customers with the ability to proactively manage service
performance. By understanding that a service is dependent upon an EJB,
operators can monitor the EJB thread pool as advanced warning of a
service’s availability.
Proactive SLA management is what gives
our customers a pronounced lift in their IT environments. The results
will vary from environment to environment.
SOA WSJ: Are
SOAs generally too loosely-coupled to manage effectively? Does their
negative potential for downtime outweigh their positive potential to
push information out to customers and suppliers?
KJ: SOA’s
create complexity, but this complexity can be controlled with effective
management tools. SOA’s require that organizations view their
technology differently – application silos are now often seen as
liabilities, not an effective strategy for simplicity. Today, because
of SOA’s, technology is more about the transaction itself as it crosses
multiple applications, it’s about the business process.
This
shift also means we need to look at management technology differently.
Silo’ed management will not work in SOA. Enterprises need a solution
that has deep, broad visibility. When Wily invented application
performance management we saw this coming, and today Wily is the only
management vendor to provide end-to-end deep visibility across the IT
infrastructure, in real time, 100% of the time.
