iPhone Apps Fall Short on the iPad
Jun. 22, 2010 03:28 PM
After using the iPad for a few weeks, I am totally and utterly fixated by the device. What I am not 100% happy with are the iPhone Apps that it can run and I think that iPhone Apps just fall short on the iPad.
I am no way suggesting that the wealth of iPhone apps already on the App Store are no good. Quite the contrary, I have a number of them on my iPhone and use them all daily, they really make my Mobile Lifestyle easy. The point really comes down to the screen real estate...
- On pre-iPhone 4 (iPhone 3G/3GS) devices the screen resolution is 480 x 320,
- the newly released iPhone 4's 'Retina Display' increases it to a eye-pleasing 960 x 640
- and the iPad to a fantastic 1024 x 768.
The increase in size for the iPad opens up a world of new app possibilities, with more data being able to be displayed in clearer and vivid formats and in addition a redesigning exercise for existent apps.
Yes the iPad can pixel-double iPhone apps to fill the screen, though with this comes slight pixelation and all your getting is a large application. It is only when you get your first set of iPad apps, specifically designed for iPad, that you realize the full experience you can gain form this device.
The first thing that strikes you in an iPad app is the use of higher resolution, larger scale images. Then secondly, there is the larger area not only to present data, but mostly to interact with this data. For me, this whole second point is the key to my belief why the iPad is being adopted by Enterprise Businesses.
With the iPhone the screen is smaller and this along with the amount of data that can be displayed, makes app design a challenge. Now the challenge is to take your iPhone app to the next dimension!
