Application integration and data integration utilize a broad spectrum of technologies and processes. There is a broad continuum of enabling software technologies and the hardware necessary to support them. These terms describe the important connectivity between software applications and their underlying software infrastructure. Hardware components are also a factor in data center connectivity – many of the data integration components come packaged with dedicated server(s) or special hardware buses for connectivity. Technologies and terms covered in this report include ETL (Extract, Transform and Load), EAI (Enterprise Application Integration), EII (Enterprise Information Integration), Cloud Integration, Data Virtualization and Master Data Management. Middleware is also discussed and covered. Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) technologies are not covered in this report. This report considers carefully the differing requirements for cloud integration and on-premise integration. Cloud architectures can vary substantially and bring very different application and data integration challenges. Public clouds, private clouds, hybrid clouds and on-premise systems must all be considered as different environments, each unique, in consideration of potential integrations.
