Asia Cloud Computing Association Reaches for the Stars
Microsoft, EMC, Cisco, NetApp, Rackspace Join Hong Kong-based Group

Numerous star American and European Cloud Computing brands, joined by the leading Philippine telco, have launched the Asian Cloud Computing Association (www.asiacloud.org), which is based out of Hong Kong.

Asia Cloud is a non-profit, vendor-neutral organization, and "will address regional issues and challenges to adoption of cloud computing in Asia including privacy and security concerns, compliance and regulatory mandates, licensing models, service levels, and other market risks," according to an official statement.

"Cloud adoption in the Asia Pacific region has yet to reach its full potential," stated Asia Cloud Chairman Sundi Balu in announcing the new organization. "(Many) in Asia have voiced several concerns, particularly around security, service levels, and regulatory positions. There is a strong sense of urgency to have these concerns resolved by an open industry collaboration focused on the actual market realities and conditions in Asia," he added.

Asia Cloud's founding members are Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco Systems, EMC Corporation, Microsoft, NetApp, Nokia Siemens Networks, The Philippines' PLDT/Smart, Rackspace, REACH, Norway's Telenor Group, and Verizon.

Other top Asia Cloud officers include Bernie Trudel (Vice Chairman), Per Dahlberg (CEO), Mark Ross (CTO), and Vasile Radoaca (Secretary/Treasurer).

Asia Cloud cites IDC estimates that the market for cloud computing in Asia outside of Japan will grow to around $1.3 billion this year and will continue to expand at a rate of approximately 40 percent a year until 2014,. In Japan, the cloud computing market is expected to grow to US$29.2 billion in 2015, according to a Japanese ministry.

Yet a host of problems, including "government policies oriented to traditional computing models are inhibiting market growth" (according to Asia Cloud) stand in the way of this progress. Thus, the imperative to form this organization.
