Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Mobileplay offers free content service you can share with your friends

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobileplay, a new first-of-its-kind service, has just the thing to dress up your holiday purchase or gift of a PDA, BlackBerry or smartphone: free games, news, weather, blogs, astrology forecasts and more that you can share with your friends and colleagues.

The Mobileplay service allows users of smart mobile devices to download games, applications and articles and exchange them with other users even if they have completely different devices.

"There are so many competing devices and operating systems on the market that we wanted to make it easy for people, whether they own a Treo, a BlackBerry or a Windows Mobile smartphone, to download content and interact with their friends," said Mobileplay founder and CEO James Ryan.

At the same time, said Ryan, "Mobileplay's application-based technology allows users to download and navigate content 10 times faster than traditional browser solutions and store it off line so they can read it on a plane or train, even if they don't' have a real-time wireless connection."

Users of Palm OS, Pocket PC/Windows Mobile and BlackBerry devices can download Mobileplay now for free at http://www.mobileplay.com/ via their desktop computer. Treo users can download over-the-air directly to their device at http://mpota.com/.

The Mobileplay service is free and supported by advertising. The company provides a ground-breaking method for major brand advertisers to reach customers using smart devices, and offers major media companies a patent- pending ad network system for generating revenue when delivering content to mobile devices.

Among the charter advertisers launching with unique mobile applications are Microsoft Office and Volvo Cars of North America.

"Volvo is always looking for new and innovative ways to reach market influencers," said Denise Clause, e-Business Manager for Volvo Cars of North America. "Mobileplay's unique technology platform and audience of tech-savvy, early-adopters provides just that."

Mobileplay delivers news, weather, stock updates, sports scores, blogs, casual games, trivia, movie times, travel information and a variety of other content, all of it free to users. Among Mobileplay's content partners are such major brands as About.com, Astrology.com, AP Digital, BusinessWeek Online, Gawker Media, Nerve.com, PC World, The Sporting News, USATODAY and The Weather Channel. Movie listings and Fodor's restaurant and hotel reviews will be added in January.

Ryan cited studies that indicate smart mobile devices are currently experiencing a 50 percent annual growth rate and that more than 100 million are expected to be in use by the end of 2006. Mobile advertising is expected to reach $1 billion in the next few years.

"Consumers want free content and services in the digital age," said Ryan. "That has been proven by the phenomenal success of the internet. We wanted to take advantage of the growing interest in mobile advertising to bring free content to BlackBerry and smartphone users, too."
