iPad 2s Reportedly Sold Out
They went mostly to people who didn’t own an iPad yet according to Piper Jeffrey analyst Gene Munster

There are no official numbers yet but multiple channel checks by Wall Street suggest that Apple sold somewhere between 400,000 and a million iPads over the weekend.

That's more than the 300,000 the first iPad did its first weekend out.

They went mostly to people who didn't own an iPad yet according to Piper Jeffrey analyst Gene Munster who surveyed 200-odd buyers.

The dingus, priced at $499-$829 like the original, went on sale late Friday.

Retail stores, including Apple's own, are reportedly tapped out, with limited restocking. Apple's web site started showing shipping delays of three-four weeks for the thing by Sunday, a timeline that was pushed out to four-five weeks Tuesday.

Down the road there may be shortages of component parts like the Toshiba-made flash memory reportedly used in the iPad and iPhone because of the tragedy in Japan unless Samsung, which also makes the iPad 2's A5 processor, picks up the slack.

The gismo is supposed to go on sale in 25 other countries on March 25 presuming Apple's got enough stock. It had to push back the international release of the first iPad last year too.

Apple has delayed the launch in Japan, a market that represents around 5% of its sales. A grey market is already up and running in the Orient.

UBM Techinsights estimated the component cost of the iPad 2 at $270, up from $245 for the iPad One; IHS iSuppli figures parts for the $729 32GB 3G version cost $323.35 (the Verizon model) or $326.60 (the AT&T model).

Motorola Mobility has priced the Wi-Fi-only model of its Xoom tablet at $599 to compete with Apple. The Android Honeycomb-running device will have 32GB of memory and matches Apple's 32GB price. It's supposed to be available in the US March 27.

Xoom is supposed to have the best shot at denting iPad's momentum.
