Hard on the heels of the Red Hat-JBoss acquisition announcement, which overnight transformed Red Hat into a competititor in the middleware space, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison (pictured) has been contemplating an aggressive Oracle counter-move within the Linux market. "I don't think Oracle [wants] another Microsoft in Red Hat," says Ellison.
In an interview to the UK-based Financial Times, Ellison confirmed that Oracle has in the past contemplated buying Novell, and that the $350M acquisition of JBoss by Red Hat, which gives Red Hat an open middlware stack, has given him a renewed reason to look at the open source software market.
"We don't have to fight open source, we have to exploit open source," Ellison told the newspaper, which in turn commented:
"Such a move would redraw the software landscape and open a new front in Oracle’s long rivalry with US rival Microsoft."
