The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation Celebrates $147 Million in Grants Paid and Approved in Past Year

More than 1,000 expected to attend Annual Community Gathering November 13

BALTIMORE, Nov. 12, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, one of the largest private foundations in the United States, will welcome community, civic, and business leaders to its Annual Community Gathering, tomorrow, at Baltimore's historic Hippodrome Theatre:

  • Tuesday, November 13, 2012
  • 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
  • Hippodrome Theatre, 12 N. Eutaw Street, Baltimore, MD 21201

The multi-media program will celebrate the Foundation's mission, partnerships, and accomplishments of the past year. Tom Tierney, Chairman of The Bridgespan Group and a recognized leader in the nonprofit sector, will be the keynote speaker on the topic of "Making a Difference — or not — Through Philanthropy". Many dignitaries including Maryland Lt. Governor Anthony Brown and Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake also are scheduled to attend.

During the past year, The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation paid more than $84 million in grants to nonprofits serving disadvantaged and vulnerable populations. In addition, the Foundation approved grants totaling just over $63 million, which will be paid in future years; a total investment of $147 million in direct services to those in need. Every year, as much as 40 percent of all Weinberg Foundation grants remains within Maryland.

"The Weinberg Foundation is fortunate to be recognized as a national philanthropic leader, meeting the most basic needs of individuals and families in our hometowns including Baltimore and around the world," said Rachel Garbow Monroe, Weinberg Foundation President. "We celebrate another year of amazing partnerships and countless lives touched. But all at the Foundation are mindful that none of this would be possible without the support and assistance of numerous nonprofits and, especially, the means and vision provided by Harry and Jeanette Weinberg."

The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation administers grants through six primary program areas, Basic Human Needs and Health; Disabilities; Education, Children, Youth and Families, General Community Support, Older Adults, and Workforce Development. The Maryland Small Grants Program (MSGP) administers smaller, streamlined grants for all program areas.
