Paul Wilson Goss: iPhone Cameras Provide Artists With Additional Tools
A new article discusses the surprisingly high quality of iPhone cameras, and how these devices are adding another dimension to photographers' toolboxes. Photographer Paul Wilson Goss comments.

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- A new article from CNN discusses the new high quality cameras found on iPhone devices. These powerful little cameras are helping photographers take eye-popping pictures without having to lug around several bags of equipment. Paul Wilson Goss, a photographer and owner of Paul Wilson Goss Photography, believes this is a positive and interesting development for amateur and experienced photographers alike.

In the piece, artist Karen Divine explains how she frequently joins other photographers for photo sessions. While they arrive with bulky equipment, she shoots with her iPhone camera alone. While some originally questioned her strategies, her methods have won her several awards for her work. Since she realized the potential her iPhone camera had, Karen downloaded 50 photography apps onto her phone and has since put her professional equipment into storage.

Other photographers are also using the iPhone camera as a supplement to more traditional photography equipment. Says mixed media artist David Swann, who has worked in welding, film and digital photography, printmaking, painting and Photoshop, "It's not out of disrespect for traditional processes. It's just another way of taking a creative idea and putting it out there for people to share."

Photographer David Rams explains that the more discreet iPhone camera allows photographers to capture everyday moments without having to feel like they are constantly in work mode. He explains, "There are some moments you don't want to be carrying a camera so you can be involved in it, but a cell phone is a lot more spontaneous."

While iPhone cameras may not provide exactly the photograph quality that expensive professional equipment can offer, many photographers agree that having the ability to spontaneously snap a shot of a unique cloud formation or a beautiful sunset without having to fumble for their bulky camera outweighs the benefits of perfect lighting.

Paul Wilson Goss is a photographer who owns his own studio. He also appreciates the quality of the new cameras found in smartphones like the iPhone. He says, "While I do enjoy creating works with top-of-the-line equipment, there's also something rewarding about snapping a beautiful shot when I'm out hiking and catch a nice view, or when I'm running errands and happen to spot a rainbow. Camera phones give you flexibility that more cumbersome professional equipment doesn't allow. The quality of new camera phones is something both professional and amateur photographers are lucky to have the ability to experience. We should use it to our advantage."
