Full Story:

EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC) today announced the availability of OneFS® 7.0, the next-generation EMC® Isilon® industry-leading scale-out NAS operating system. OneFS 7.0 drives new levels of scalability, performance, ease of management and security for the innovative EMC Isilon storage portfolio. Codenamed "Mavericks" and first unveiled at EMC World earlier this year, OneFS 7.0 enables enterprises to manage rapidly growing, unstructured file-based data more effectively, lowering OPEX and empowering customers to take full advantage of the significant opportunities presented by Big Data.

Testing of EMC's anticipated OneFS 7.0 returned overwhelmingly positive feedback from customers and partners alike, measuring significant gains for enterprise workloads. Users can benefit from a 25% increase in single file system throughput, which significantly improves performance for large-scale enterprise applications; added caching capabilities designed to reduce latency by 50% for I/O-intensive applications; heightened security for enterprise compliance; and tighter integration with VMware designed to leverage VMware's VAAI and VASA APIs to accelerate and simplify scale-out NAS for virtualization.

Additional security features include compliance with SEC 17a-4 requirements for tamper-proof data protection, roles-based administration for separate storage and file system access to prevent unauthorized change to files and the creation of secure, isolated storage pools with authentication zones.

EMC Isilon OneFS 7.0 is generally available this week.

Customer Quotes:

Ian Patterson, Systems Consultant, CSR plc

"Our OneFS 7.0 performance testing was impressive. We experienced close to a 2x improvement in single stream writes, exactly as advertised. Read speeds are also high, as we are seeing 8Gbps of throughput on 10Gbps network cards. Add these improvements to the already resilient, scalable and easy-to-manage OneFS file system, and it's clear why we can now simultaneously power up and fine tune our storage with EMC Isilon."

Vinicius Viteri, Storage Administrator, Locaweb

"OneFS 7.0 is designed to reduce NFS latency — a critical feature for scale-out storage. Additionally, the security features, such as authentication zones, both simplify management and further tighten security, enabling us to put the right resources toward retaining and protecting all of our data. This EMC Isilon release is fast, smart and simple — exactly what we need to step up our storage capabilities."

Channel Reseller Quotes:

Olivier Gaumont, Director of Servers and Storage, Bull

"We consider the release of the OneFS 7.0 operating system to be a landmark in the evolution of EMC's Isilon storage. Bull is a partner of choice for organizations in the area of Digital Capital Management, and OneFS 7.0 opens tremendous opportunities for our customers to derive more business benefit and to better manage the rapidly growing unstructured data within their core business computing environments. Additionally, One FS 7.0 will enable Bull to accelerate its presence in markets where Isilon already has a proven track record of excellence such as life sciences, media and energy."

Bob Olwig, Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Development, World Wide Technology, Inc.

"As we develop solutions that help our customers take advantage of the dynamic shifts happening in today's IT environments, we favor infrastructure partners that have a vision for where the industry is headed and the mutual opportunities that exist there. And with the introduction of OneFS 7.0, EMC has again proven that they are committed to helping us design and deliver storage solutions that will help propel our customers' businesses forward, not just meet their needs of today."

Jamie Shepard, Executive Vice President, International Computerware, Inc. (ICI)

"At ICI, we recognize the increasingly important role that Big Data plays in creating meaningful competitive advantage for our customers. EMC clearly shares that same vision. With the introduction of its next-gen Isilon operating system — OneFS 7.0 — EMC has succeeded in simultaneously addressing Big Data challenges AND the type of file system challenges commonly encountered by enterprises, allowing ICI to compete and win more frequently against products from other vendors. We applaud this vision and look forward to working with EMC to help our customers meet their most pressing storage challenges."

Technology Partner Quote:

Cheryl Doninger, SAS Senior Director, Research and Development

"Big Data will continue to grow and put more pressure on companies to continue to increase performance. Isilon OneFS will help address this with the simplicity of a shared storage environment, ease of administration, performance and scalability. Our customers demand powerful yet easy-to-use tools for managing shared file systems critical to working with SAS software. With OneFS 7.0, companies using both SAS and Isilon technology are able to easily manage Big Data as it continues to get bigger."

Analyst Quote:

Ben Woo, Managing Director, Neuralitix

"EMC Isilon has always been about scale, and scale is driven by much more than hardware. OneFS 7.0 brings key capabilities for performance, scalability and availability in the latest version of a proven OS—making scale-out NAS even simpler to manage while catering to storing the biggest of Big Data. EMC has again coupled power with innovation with this latest EMC Isilon upgrade."

EMC Quote:

Sam Grocott, Vice President Marketing & Product Management, EMC Isilon

"With the way Big Data is growing, customers can't keep throwing more hardware and administrators at the problem—they need smart, scalable software to ensure high performance and availability in the form of scale-out NAS. The more complex storage becomes, the simpler management needs to be, which is why we've architected OneFS 7.0 for easy management of the powerful storage infrastructure that's under the hood. Overall, the latest version of OneFS offers the best of both worlds: the ease of a simple storage solution with the horsepower of EMC Isilon."
