COLUMBUS, Ohio, Nov. 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Representatives of the United Coalition of Ohio Auto Recyclers (UCOAR) attended Wednesday's meeting of the Ohio House Insurance Committee and spoke in opposition to Senate Bill 273, which was under consideration.  UCOAR's representatives educated committee members about the job-killing impacts that the legislation would create.  SB 273 would weaken the standards regarding who can buy salvage automobiles at auction and allow out-of-state buyers to disrupt the market here.

"We have spoken clearly on the record about this terrible bill which would only kill Ohio small business jobs in a fragile market when our state's slowly recovering economy needs help, not hindrance," said George R. Sapir, a spokesperson for UCOAR.  "This bill has the potential to eliminate up to 2500 jobs or more in Ohio.  Now that is a problem.  Ohio has sound rules in place governing the sale and disposition of badly damaged salvage vehicles.  Opening up that market to an unregulated, free for all scheme will only put our public safety at risk while killing Ohio jobs at the same time.  It is a LOSE-LOSE proposition for Ohio and OHIO JOBS.

SB 273 would allow unlicensed persons to bid on salvage automobiles at Ohio salvage auctions.  Currently, these auctions are limited to licensed, qualified automobile recyclers who have been screened and approved according to law, including criminal and credit background checks to eliminate the criminal element.  The proposed SB273 would allow anyone to buy Ohio's badly damaged cars, many of which will return to the highways in unsafe condition and potentially with cloned vehicle identification numbers (VIN) on stolen cars and trucks. 

A third hearing on the bill will likely be scheduled on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 and a vote may be taken at that time.  UCOAR is calling on concerned citizens to register their opposition to this bad legislation by visiting http://UCOAR.ORG/JOIN.  UCOAR also recommends that concerned citizens call, email, and meet with their State Representatives to explain why SB 273 should not pass.  Ohio jobs and safety depend on our defeat of this awful proposed legislation.
