Highlighting the weekend at The Box is a January 18th salute to the six surviving members of the recently pardoned "Wilmington 10," led by EEDG's newly named Chairman, Dr. Benjamin Chavis. Dr. Chavis and nine other young activists were wrongly imprisoned on false charges of arson in connection with civil rights demonstrations in Wilmington, North Carolina in 1971. The convictions were overturned on appeal in 1980, and North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue granted a pardon of innocence on Dec. 31, 2012.

Dr. Chavis has been one of the world's foremost civil rights leaders dating all the way back to his exemplary work with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his service as former Executive Director of the NAACP. With the vindication of receiving the first pardon of its kind ever issued by the Governor of North Carolina, Dr. Chavis and his former students, who stood together through 40 years of torment and turmoil, will be saluted for their long perseverance and indomitable spirit in a once in a lifetime celebration to kick off this most historic weekend.
