Niklas Bjorkman wrote: Firstly I agree with your conclusion. NewSQL takes the best of the traditional databases and NoSQL databases to combine the benefits of both worlds. I do not agree that NewSQL vendors focus on giving scale-out features to transactional data. The NewSQL market is focusing on giving true ACID support combined with extreme performance, stepping away from the traditional relational structures in databases. A lot of developers appreciate the ease of accessing data using SQL and I think we will see more and more databases supporting standard SQL. As you said - NewSQL databases often maintain the...

Emerson Launches Online HVAC Resource for Homeowners and Contractors

R-410A, SEER, AFUE and IAQ might sound like alphabet soup to most homeowners, but that terminology can make a world of difference when it comes to a home’s level of comfort and the energy bill at the end of the month. Unfortunately, while most people understand why “miles-per-gallon” is important to consider when purchasing a car, they don’t take into consideration similar measures of efficiency or performance when investing in one of the most important functions in a home: the air conditioning and heating system. To help homeowners make better decisions about their heating and cooling needs, Emerson Climate Technologies, a business segment of Emerson (NYSE: EMR), has launched AC & Heating Connect (www.ac-heatingconnect.com).

The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that more than 3 million HVAC systems fail each year, often at the hottest or coldest times, putting most homeowners in a bind to make a quick decision instead of the smart one. “Most people tend to ask relatives or neighbors for advice when faced with this situation, but they often can’t provide the most informed answers since these types of major decisions tend to only be made once or twice in a lifetime,” said Frank Landwehr, vice president of marketing at Emerson Climate Technologies. “AC & Heating Connect gives homeowners a place to go for fact-based, objective answers when faced with an untimely HVAC repair or replacement.”

AC & Heating Connect is divided into sections for homeowners, facility managers, and HVAC contractors, with varying levels of technical detail in each section. Homeowners can find unbiased information about how heating and cooling systems work, tips and best practices for maximizing efficiency and comfort, and resources to make smarter decisions, such as an HVAC glossary and questions to ask a contractor.

Other HVAC professionals and contractors are given industry insights and real-world tools to help them engage with their customers and improve their business along with access to more technical information after registering on the site.

“There are other sites that provide information on HVAC systems, but our research shows that homeowners need a better way to make sense of the complex terminology and regulation changes facing them today,” said Landwehr. “There are other resources for contractors, but we found they want help connecting with homeowners and building that level of trust and understanding which comes from sharing the common information found on a single site.”

What sets AC & Heating Connect apart from other help sites is the level of detail and objective support provided to homeowners and contractors. Emerson Climate Technologies is not planning to promote specific products or solutions on the site and is not supporting the site through outside sponsorships. “We hope to be a one-stop shop for people looking for answers to questions about their HVAC equipment,” said Landwehr.
