PORTLAND, OR -- (Marketwire) -- 02/12/13 -- iovation, the leading provider of device reputation protection against online fraud and abuse, revealed today that 15 percent of all transactions and activities it protected on online dating sites originated from mobile devices in 2012, a 65 percent increase from 2011. Leveraging ReputationManager 360 -- iovation's device reputation and real-time fraud prevention service -- iovation determined that the top mobile devices consumers used to access dating sites last year were:
1. Android Phones -- 49 percent of all mobile transactions
"Although mobile devices are already commonly used on online dating sites by analyzing iovation's device usage trends we can see that their use will soon become the norm rather than the exception," said Molly O'Hearn, Vice President of Operations at iovation. "As consumers become more comfortable with using mobile devices in online dating, cybercriminals will also expand their use of mobile phones and tablets to exploit others wanting to make romantic connections."
Heading into Valentine's Day, iovation warns dating sites to be on the lookout for any potential fraud schemes coming from mobile devices. In 2012, iovation found that 0.3 percent of all activity on online dating sites conducted from mobile devices was fraudulent, compared to 1.36 percent from desktop computers and laptops on online dating sites. The company reported that the most used mobile devices for fraud on online dating sites were:
1. Android Phones -- 27 percent of all mobile fraud
The most common types of fraudulent and abusive transactions that iovation protects against on online dating websites include credit card fraud, spamming, scams and solicitations, identity mining, profile misrepresentation and harassment. ReputationManager 360 from iovation tracks the online behaviors of 1.2 billion devices; everything from desktops to laptops, mobile phones to tables, and gaming consoles to smart TVs. By utilizing iovation's device reputation intelligence gathered across its network of thousands of security professionals and their online businesses, online communities can determine whether or not a device would be likely to conduct a fraudulent transaction. This unique iovation capability makes it possible to proactively identify devices that are associated with abuse and stop bad actors before they can strike.
