OSSI Shares Its Open Source Vision Across Government Technology Systems
Open Source Software Institute names Industry Advisory Board members

“Our common interest in open source solutions has enabled OSSI to put together an all-star team of Government, commercial and community partners,” said John Farrell of HP/Fortify, OSSI's volunteer chairman and Chief Information Security Officer, as OSSI named several new members to its Industry Advisory Board.

“OSSI was founded in 2001 based on the idea that one day, the technological strength and efficiencies of the open source model would find its ideal fit within Government systems," Farrell continued.

For more than a decade, said Farrell, OSSI has been sharing the vision of open source across government technology systems. He added: "I believe that time has come. It is truly exciting to be a part of the open source experience.”

New Board members include: Bill Bacci of HP Federal; Dr. William Grossmann of Global Projects Design; AJ Jaghori , former CTO of L-3 Stratis; Jack Kurtz of sqrrl; and Robert Sterling, a career Wall Street attorney and investment banker.

OSSI is a membership-based, non-profit 501(c)(6) organization comprised of corporate, government, academic, and open source development community representatives. Its mission is to promote the development and implementation of open source software solutions within U.S. Federal, state, and local government agencies.

“The primary role of our Advisory Board members is to help the organization maintain focus on open source technology issues that are important to Government and industry adopters,” said Carl Livesay, who was recently named Chief Operations Officer for OSSI.

“Our Advisory Board members play a very hands-on role in helping to organize monthly technology-specific meetings which are held in the Washington, DC area," livesay explained.

The new Industry Advisory Board members and their role with OSSI include:

Bill Bacci OSSI Security Lead. Bacci is the executive account manager and chief architect for HP Software Applications and will lead OSSI efforts focusing on software and cyber security practices.

Dr. William GrossmannInternational Outreach. Prior research positions have included serving as a senior scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Munich, Germany and as a research professor of Applied Mathematics and associate director Magneto Fluid Dynamics Division at New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. He has also served as a vice president and chief scientist at SAIC. Dr. Grossmann will be leading OSSI's efforts identify global alliances within the international community of public and private-sector entities.

AJ Jaghori Mobile Technologies and OSSI’s Resident Chief Innovation Officer. Jaghori brings a rich background of cutting-edge innovation throughout the open source, mobile technologies, data sciences, and digital media communities spanning the consumer, enterprise, government, and start-ups industries. He most recently served as the CTO of Mobile Strategy & Development at L-3 Communications STRATIS and was selected by ComputerWorld magazine as a 2011 21st Century Achievement Award Finalist for his work as the Founder of the open source Social Genome Project. His current community work includes Evangelist of the Ruby on Rails application framework and Co-Founder at 37 Apps of Kindness, a community-driven "hackathon" initiative to connect philanthropy minded mobile developers and underprivileged organizations. Jaghori leads OSSI's efforts in mobile strategy as well as serving as OSSI's resident Chief Innovation Officer.

Jack Kurtz Big Data. Kurtz is a member of the federal team for sqrrl data, inc. Many of the founding members of the sqrrl team worked for the National Security Agency on the Apache Accumulo and Hadoop projects. Robert SterlingInvestment Opportunities. Sterling has spent more than 30 years as a Wall Street lawyer, law professor, investment banker, serial entrepreneur and investor in numerous technology companies.
