Embarcadero: The Answer to Developers’ Prayers
Ninety of the Fortune 100 and an active community of more than three million users worldwide use Embarcadero products

Embarcadero Technologies claims to have created the first real native multi- platform IDE – modeled on its FireMonkey widgetry – that a team can use to build apps that are processor-optimized for PCs, Macs, tablets and smartphones from a single code base on a single schedule to get to market faster without sacrificing performance.

The company revels in the thought that this year nearly a billion smartphones will be shipped, and for the first time tablets are supposed to outsell PCs.

The widgetry will work on Intel and ARM devices with Android in the lab and compile the binary directly on the CPU. That means it can be used for the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Mac OS X machines, Windows PCs, slates and Surface Pro tablets.

The script-free mojo is called RAD Studio XE4 and Embarcadero says it’ll do what vaunted HTML5 and JavaScript-based mobile development solutions can’t do.

Many multi-device solutions today rely on virtual implementations or are interpreted at run-time and are not, it says, true native apps.

The apps RAD Studio builds will run directly on the device hardware with no scripting or interpretive layer. Embarcadero says developers will get more control, tighter security and a better user experience.

They also get the full range of capabilities available on each device hence the better user experience. On iOS that means such things as motion and camera sensors and Geo location, sharesheet and notification services.

The IDE is available now. It’ll let designers quickly create no-code, visual mock-ups with live or simulated data and deploy to actual target devices (PC, phone, tablet) or simulate on Windows or Mac, giving clients and team members a far more accurate and impressive prototype experience.

The prototyping tools are built-in.

There’s local database support for SQLite, IBLite and InterBase Embedded ToGo as well as built-in multi-tier enterprise connectivity for Oracle, Sybase, DB2, InterBase, MySQL, SQL Server, Azure, Amazon Web Services, SOAP and REST services.

RAD Studio pricing starts at $1,799. It includes the Delphi, C++ Builder and HTML5 Builder development environments. An introductory 10% discount is available on most RAD Studio XE4 family products through May 22.

Figure $2,500 for the enterprise version.

Ninety of the Fortune 100 and an active community of more than three million users worldwide use Embarcadero products. The company isn’t worried about competition because of what it calls the high barrier to entry to true native code. If nothing else, the tooling is pricey to develop and requires special skills.

It says open source won’t work.
