Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

AJAXWorld Magazine's Dion Hinchcliffe To Moderate: "Web-Oriented Architecture: SOA + The Web + REST"
"Power Panel" at AJAXWorld Conference & Expo 2006

This "Power Panel" - moderated by AJAXWorld Magazine Editor-in-Chief Dion Hinchcliffe (pictured below) - will be held 12:20 - 1:15 Tues. 3 October. The theme is "Web-Oriented Architecture: SOA + The Web + REST"

Building modern SOAs and Web 2.0 sites requires a design style that goes with the "grain" of the Web. REST, a natural extension of HTTP created by the co-inventor of HTTP, is getting a lot of attention these days because it's easy to work with, aligns well with the Web, and is very high performance.

Used architecturally, REST is called Web-Oriented Architecture or WOA. But whither SOAP, the canoncial Web services protocol up to now? This panel will discuss that and more, including:

  • REST has been with us for a while, why is it taking off now?
  • What's going to happen to SOAP-based SOAs?
  • What are IBM, Microsoft, and BEA doing about REST support in their products?
  • REST seems to make Ajax programming much easier than SOAP, why?

    SUMMARY:

Web-Oriented Architecture: SOA + The Web + REST (Oct 3)
    Moderator: Dion Hinchcliffe

    12:20-1:15 PM - Keynote Hall

    PARTICIPANTS:

Jason Levitt - AJAX Evangelist, Yahoo!
Matt Mihic - Chief Architect and VP of Engineering, Rearden Commerce
Douglas Crockford - Creator of JSON
David Temkin - Founder & CTO Laszlo
Bob Zurek - Director of Advanced Technologies, IBM
