Citrix Founder Dies
Friends said his last few weeks were difficult. He didn’t deserve that. He was much too nice.

Citrix founder Ed Iacobucci died at home in his own bed Friday after a 16-month fight with pancreatic cancer, the same thing that killed Steve Jobs. He was 59.

Friends said his last few weeks were difficult. He didn’t deserve that. He was much too nice.

He had led the design team for IBM DOS and OS/2 before IBM and Microsoft were enemies and split in 1989 to start Citrix.

There he was chairman and CTO. He made it work and took it public, finally, luckily, releasing a multi-user version of NT in 1995.

A few years later, the Wall Street Journal reported Microsoft’s threat to pull its license and develop its own multi-user widgetry without Citrix as Citrix’ stock crashed.

Ed and company camped out in a Seattle hotel for what seems like months in hindsight and by hint of canny negotiations and patent threats emerged with a joint development pact and Microsoft’s agreement to bundle Citrix’ WinFrame in NT Server.

He retired from Citrix in 2000 and in 2002, to investigate SaaS, started DayJet Corporation, a regional airline that ceased operating in 2008 at the height of the financial collapse, months after it had started functioning.

He pushed on, co-founding VirtualWorks Group to deal with server sprawl, He served there as president and CEO until he stepped down last month.
