Exclusive Q&A with Chris Tella, CMO and EVP of Sales at Basic6

Cloud Computing Journal: How are cloud standards playing a role in expanding adoption among users? Are standards helping new business models for service providers?
Chris Tella: Standards are necessary for the maturation of any globally distributed product, particularly a utilitarian service, in order to truly flourish. They certainly are an effective tool for adaptation by new users.
Cloud Computing Journal: How are hybrid clouds evolving to allow the coexistence of private and public clouds? What are the challenges to meeting a true hybrid cloud scenario?
Tella: Hybrids need to coexist with private and public clouds as that's what cloud consumers will request. The best advice I've heard so far was from an AWS representative discussing scalability - make use of the automated tools such as ours which are designed to facilitate cloud management.
Cloud Computing Journal: Are on-premise software vendors successfully migrating their business model to a SaaS model? What are the challenges faced in this journey?
Tella: This really depends on the software's objective. In our case, as an extremely light tool designed for efficient management of diverse server platforms including cloud, DC, and/or hybrids, it wouldn't mean a lot, and could quite possibly add yet another dimension even if it resided in the cloud. Again, it matters what your ultimate objectives are.
Cloud Computing Journal: With several vendors lowering costs for infrastructure, is there a way for new cloud service providers entering this space to make money?
Tella: Provided you have an offering that does something better, why not? For example, we can save operations staff a significant amount of time and hassle managing server assets.
Cloud Computing Journal: What are the challenges for end users to adopt a new model for application development using Platform as a Service? Are vendors doing enough to meet their needs?
Tella: IAM capabilities are often considered advantageous for efficient application development. The trick is expanding this capability across multiple platforms, cloud or hybrid. This is a key functionality we've built into our software.

Just prior to Basic6, Chris successfully introduced the many advantages of virtual (Cloud) computing to the SMB market with UFlexData, a start-up, which is now part of a large, publicly traded firm.
Additionally, Chris was founder and president of Woodridge Systems, a provider of technology consulting services, and was a highly awarded business development manager with AGS Information Services, selling management consulting services to major corporations. He began his career in the highly selective executive development program at GTE.
Chris earned a BA from New England College, and holds an MBA from Thunderbird, the American Graduate School of International Management.
