Containers and microservices have become topics of intense interest throughout the cloud developer and enterprise IT communities.
Microservices focuses on the business and technology of the software architecture design pattern, in which complex applications are composed of small, independent processes communicating with each other using language-agnostic APIs.
Containers are not being considered for the first time by the cloud community, but a current era of re-consideration has pushed them to the top of the cloud agenda.
Rather than just stuff an OS into a container, for example, developers and deployers should consider a spectrum of microservices and what they can do.
Sessions at the "First Containers & Microservices Conference" in New York will include:
Lunch Power Panel | Microservices & IoT
Buzzword alert: Microservices and IoT at a DevOps conference? What could possibly go wrong? Join this panel of experts as they peel away the buzz and discuss the important architectural principles behind implementing IoT solutions for the enterprise. As remote IoT devices and sensors become increasingly intelligent, they become part of our distributed cloud environment, and we must architect and code accordingly. At the very least, you'll have no problem filling in your buzzword bingo cards.
Using RancherOS to Run Microservices on Docker at Scale
Docker is an excellent platform for organizations interested in running microservices. It offers portability and consistency between development and production environments, quick provisioning times, and a simple way to isolate services. This presentation will walk through these and other benefits of using Docker to run microservices, and provide an overview of RancherOS, a minimalist distribution of Linux designed expressly to run Docker. We will also discuss Rancher, an orchestration and service discovery platform designed for running Docker at scale in production on any cloud and computing infrastructure.
Architecting for the Cloud with Cloud Foundry
As the world moves from DevOps to NoOps, application deployment to the cloud ought to become a lot simpler. However, Applications have been architected with a much tighter coupling than it needs to be which makes deployment in different environments and migration between them harder. The Microservices architecture which is the basis of many new age distributed systems such as OpenStack, NetFlix and so on is at the heart of CloudFoundry - a complete developer-oriented Platform as a Service (PaaS) that is IaaS agnostic and supports vCloud, OpenStack and AWS.
Docker Management for Humans
Container frameworks, such as Docker, provide a variety of benefits, including density of deployment across infrastructure, convenience for application developers to push updates with low operational hand-holding, and a fairly well defined deployment workflow that can be orchestrated. Container frameworks also enable a DevOps approach to application development by cleanly separating concerns between operations and development teams. But running multi-container, multi-server apps with containers is very hard.
Exploring Storage Options for Docker Containers
Follow me on a journey to solve the problem of keeping files in sync between multiple Docker containers. I'll discuss using rsync, GlusterFS, Ceph, BitTorrent Sync, and ClusterHQ. I'll break down the tools that are needed to help create a seamless user experience for Docker administrators. In the end can we have an environment that we can easily move Docker containers, servers, and volumes without impacting our applications? I'll share my results and you can decide for yourself.
What, Why, and How of IaaS and PaaS
The essence of cloud computing is that all consumable IT resources are delivered as services. This session demonstrates the concepts and implementations two important cloud computing deliveries: Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS). We will detail from business and technical viewpoints on what exactly they are, why we care, how they are different and in what ways, and the strategies for IT to transition into and take advantages of these emerging service models.
A Platform to Build Search-Enabled Applications
Search-Enabled Applications are a new breed of applications that utilize a search index as their backbone for data retrieval. These applications can easily adapt to new data sets and provide access to both structured and unstructured data. They also provide faster data retrieval, are context aware and enable access to all different types of data which result in an extremely productive end-user experience. A wide variety of use cases ranging from database offloading to enterprise search, to business applications like compliance and 360-degree view customer dashboards can be implemented using this new architecture.
Speaker Bio: Sushil is the CEO of OpenCrowd, a product and services firm with over 20 years of experience in building data intensive systems. As CEO, Sushil spends a significant part of his time consulting with clients on leveraging cloud, mobile and search based technologies to build user centric, data and context aware solutions. Most recently he was involved in the launch of DragonGlass, a multi-tenant cloud based platform to enable interactive search based applications. Prior to joining OpenCrowd, Sushil was Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Scient Inc, the fastest growing Internet Services Company of the 90's. In this role at Scient, Sushil delivered enterprise e-Business solutions for many leading companies around the world. Prior to Scient, Sushil was Director of Technology for Cambridge Technology Partners (CTP).
Deploy in Scale With Docker, CoreOS, Kubernetes and Apache Stratos
Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) is a technology designed to make devops easier and allow developers to focus on application development. The PaaS takes care of provisioning, scaling, HA, and other cloud management aspects. Apache Stratos is a PaaS codebase developed in Apache and designed to create a highly productive developer environment while also supporting powerful deployment options.
Orchestrating Distributed Deployments with Docker and Containers
Thanks to Docker, it becomes very easy to leverage containers to build, ship, and run, any Linux application, on any kind of infrastructure. Docker is particularly helpful for microservice architectures, because their successful implementation relies on a fast, efficient deployment mechanism - which is precisely one of the features of Docker.
Containers: Don't Skeu Them Up. Use Microservices Instead.
Skeuomorphism usually means retaining existing design cues in something new that doesn't actually need them. However, the concept of skeuomorphism can be thought of as applying more broadly, to applying existing patterns to new technologies that, in fact, cry out for new approaches. In this session, Red Hat's Gordon Haff will discuss why containers should be paired with new architectural practices such as microservices rather than mimicking legacy sever virtualization workflows and architectures.
Pushing the DevOps Envelope: How Microservices Extend DevOps to the Network
DevOps tends to focus on the relationship between Dev and Ops, putting an emphasis on the ops and application infrastructure. But that's changing with microservices architectures. This session will focus on how microservices are changing the underlying architectures needed to scale, secure and deliver applications based on highly distributed (micro) services and why that means an expansion into "the network" for DevOps.
Dockerize Networking: Solving the Docker Networking Train Wreck
While Docker continues to be the darling of startups, enterprises and IT innovators around the world, networking continues to be a real mess. Indeed, managing the interaction between Docker containers and networks has always been fraught with complications. And without automation in networking, the vision of running Docker at scale and letting IT run the same apps unchanged on the laptop and in the data center or for any cloud cannot be realized.
DevOps with Containers with Microservices
Containers have changed the mind of IT in DevOps. They enable developers to work with dev, test, stage and production environments identically. Containers provide the right abstraction for Microservices and many cloud platforms have integrated them into deployment pipelines. DevOps and Containers together help companies to achieve their business goals faster and more effectively. At this session we will review the current landscape of DevOps with Containers. In addition, we will discuss known issues and solutions for enterprise applications in Containers.
Containers: New Ways to Deploy and Manage Applications at Scale
The last decade was about virtual machines, but the next one is about containers. Containers enable a service to run on any host at any time. Traditional tools are starting to show cracks because they were not designed for this level of application portability. Now is the time to look at new ways to deploy and manage applications at scale.
Speaker Bio: Jake Moshenko is the product manager for the Quay.io container registry at CoreOS, a Linux distribution with containers as a first-class citizen and software distribution channel. Formerly of Google, Amazon, and Boeing, he has been building robust distributed systems for over 10 years.
The Battle for Cloud Hosting: Containers vs. Virtual Machines
There is no question that the cloud is where business want to host data. Until recently Hypervisor virtualization was the most widely used method in cloud computing. Recently virtual containers have been gaining in popularity, and for good reason. In the debate between virtual machines and containers, the latter have been seen as the new kid on the block - and like other emerging technology have had some initial shortcomings. However, the container space has evolved drastically since coming onto the cloud hosting scene over 10 years ago. So, what has changed? In this presentation Tenko will discuss the security, speed, scalability, cost and outlook for the future, of container cloud hosting.
Software Is Eating the World
Companies that were not previously in the technology space now find themselves competing with Google and Amazon on the speed of innovation. As the innovation cycle accelerates, companies must embrace rapid and constant change to both applications and their infrastructure, and find a way to deliver speed and agility of development without sacrificing reliability or efficiency of operations. In her Keynote at DevOps Summit Silicon Valley, Victoria Livschitz, CEO of Qubell, discussed how IT organizations can automate just-in-time assembly of application environments - each built for a specific purpose with the right infrastructure, components, service, data and tools - and deliver this automation to developers as a self-service. Victoria's keynote included remarks by Kira Makagon, EVP of Innovation at RingCentral, and Ratnakar Lavu, EVP of Digital Technology at Kohl's.

NoOps != No Operations
Shipping daily, injecting faults, and keeping an extremely high availability "without Ops"? Understand why NoOps does not mean no operations. Agile development methodologies require evolved operations to be successful.
In his keynote at DevOps Summit Silicon Valley, David Tesar, Microsoft Technical Evangelist on Microsoft Azure and DevOps, discussed how Microsoft teams that have made huge progress with a DevOps transformation effectively utilize operations staff and how challenges were overcome. Regardless of whether you are a startup or a mature enterprise, whether you are using PaaS, Micro Services, or Containerization, walk away with some practical tips where Ops can make a significant impact working with the development teams. Operational teams and functions are increasingly more important as the industry delivers software at a blazing pace.
DevOps Is Even More Important Than You Think
This Lunchtime Power Panel at DevOps Summit was moderated by Andi Mann, VP of Strategic Solutions at CA Technologies. Monish Sharma, VP of Customer Success at ElasticBox; Myles Steinhauser, Software Development Engineer at Blue Box; Victoria Livschitz, CEO of Qubell Inc.; and Mark Levy, Sr. Product Marketing Manager at Serena Software go beyond the basics in a discussion of why DevOps is not only important for transformation, but is mission-critical for enterprises that want to stay in business.
