Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

"Apps on a Plane" Lets Web Apps Function Offline

Etelos has announced a project that goes by the test name “Apps on a Plane.” Apps on a Plane will enable builders of any Application ported into the Etelos Ecosystem to give their Applications the ability to function without being connected to a live Internet connection, the company says. This means that the builders of Web-based Ap plications can enable them to run offline.

Apps on a Plane creates a version of a customer’s Application that is stored locally on a user’s computer. Every time changes are made offline, those changes are synchronized with the main hosted Application. The synchronization occurs automatically. Designed to bridge the gap between a Web-based Application and offline productivity, AoP gives users a local database that is automatically synchronized with a company’s remote database.

“Apps on a Plane delivers what others are promising and then some,” Etelos President and CEO Danny Kolke (pictured) said. “This isn’t just one Application that is built to synchronize. The true power of Apps on a Plane is that it enables any Web-based Application to perform without a live Internet connection.” The ability of a user to synchronize data is controllable by an easy-to-use interface. The administrator can create maps that determine the data that employees are able to synchronize. This keeps multiple users from updating the same data and also keeps sensitive information secure.

The technology behind Apps on a Plane can be deployed to any Application ported into the Etelos Ecosystem and sold in the Etelos Store, meaning that bloggers don’t have to be online to post, podcasters don’t need to be online to upload files and salesmen don’t need to be online to add leads.
