Open-Source Friendly Sun Says Microsoft Is         ‘Arrogant’ and Overly Proprietary
Open-Source Friendly Sun Says Microsoft Is         ‘Arrogant’ and Overly Proprietary

– ‘Whereas we have contributed more than eight-million lines of code to the open source community,’ says Sun spokesman –

(October 30, 2001) - According to Joshua Milne, speaking today to on behalf of Sun, “Sun Microsystems has proved that open source is not only possible, but the most successful means for future technological innovation.”

This is in stark contrast to Microsoft, he contended, referencing what he called “Microsoft’s arrogant belief that it holds the key to furthering technology by forcing its customers to use Microsoft products exclusively.”

“Innovation happens best in a free-flowing, open environment,” continued Milne. “The ability to leverage business strengths, develop competitive differentiators, and adapt to the changing demands of customers comes from the freedom to think broadly while using tools that assist the innovator to build upon that freedom.”

These official comments on behalf of Sun came in response to our question about Sun’s commitment to open source. The official position, as Milne explained, is that Sun has built a business based on this philosophy of freedom, recognizing that innovation does happen outside its own walls , and that, as he put it, “an industry can collectively advance technology more quickly than one company can.”

“Sun has the backing of an industry that does just that,” Milne went on to assert, “and continues to prove that open technologies surpass closed, proprietary ones.”

Asked by for tangible evidence of its commitment to open-source developers, Sun replied with a six examples.

“Java has been the market leader for over six years,” Milne began, “the first and only end-to-end, fully compatible, cross-platform development environment in the world.”

“Second, XML was developed in-house at Sun and was opened to the industry.”

“Third, Sun has contributed more than eight-million lines of code to the open-source community.”

“Fourth, Sun has established a portal site,, to point developers to a whole host of open-source projects.”

“Fifth, Sun offers the StarOffice productivity suite at no charge, providing interoperability with other desktop productivity suites, including Microsoft Office, while supporting the Solaris Operating Environment, Microsoft Windows, and the Linux operating system

“Sixth,” Milne concluded, “JXTA defines a new set of protocols to enable developers to build secure, interoperable peer-to-peer applications that can run on any connected device.” naturally welcomes the thoughts of Microsoft representatives about Sun’s views on the benefits of an open, Java-base d community.
