Insignia Works with Intel to Deliver High Performance Java Technology for PDAs, Mobile Handsets

(Fremont, CA) – Insignia Solutions, the leading provider of accelerated Java software solutions for smart devices, is providing support and optimizations for the Intel® PXA250 and Intel® PXA210 applications processors, which are based on the Intel® XScale™ microarchitecture. Insignia and Intel have worked together to deliver high performance and low power Java-enabled solutions for a new generation of personal and enterprise smart mobile devices.

The combined personal digital assistant (PDA), smartphone, and mobile handset segment is the fastest growing market for smart devices. Last year in Japan alone, according to the ARC Group, more than 10 million users switched to Java-enabled phones to access a variety of sophisticated services, from location based travel assistance to interactive entertainment. The latest ARC Group market research study predicts that all mobile handsets will be Java-enabled within five years. This study estimates that 1.1 billion will be capable of running Java applications by 2006.

Insignia's Java enabling software technology, the Insignia Jeode platform, is an integral part of the Intel® Personal Internet Client Architecture (Intel PCA), Intel's development blueprint for designing wireless handheld communication devices that combine voice communications and Internet access capabilities.

The Insignia Jeode platform has been specifically optimized using Insignia's patent pending acceleration techniques with Intel's on-the-fly dynamic performance optimization, while maximizing power savings. The Intel PXA250 and Intel PXA210 is a distinctive ARM* v.5TE compliant core that provides Java compatibility when combined with Insignia Jeode for PersonalJava, J2ME, Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC)/Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP), and future Java standards.

"As a supplier of the reference Java virtual machine (JVM™) environment for Intel XScale microarchitecture based applications processors, Insignia has worked closely with Intel to extend the power of Java technology to the new Intel PXA210 and PXA250 applications processors," said Mark McMillan, president of Insignia. "Together, our collective technologies deliver the high performance, low power consumption and small memory footprint required by mobile smart devices."
