Sun's Java Programming Contest Focuses on Innovation in Java Utilization
Sun's Java Programming Contest Focuses on Innovation in Java Utilization

(July 19, 2002) - In its ongoing commitment to the developer community, and to encourage the best utilization of the strengths of Java™ technology, Sun Microsystems recently held the first ever large-scale Java Programming Contest (JPC) in Taiwan. The contest was organized by Sun, Motorola, and Oracle, with the assistance of CNET Taiwan, Run!PC, Chunghwa Telecom, Borland, 104 Job Bank, and others.

The three-month contest quickly gained popularity as developers from around Taiwan gathered to showcase their innovations, with a total of 230 teams and more than 800 participants. The JPC demonstrated the best utilization of the strengths of the J2EE and the J2ME platforms as the participants built various distributed, transaction-oriented enterprise applications using J2EE on the server and J2ME on the client. JPC judges evaluated submissions based on originality, innovation, product technology, industry applicability, and commercial value. The participating developers included individual, enterprise, and college students, which made the contest fiercely competitive. Two student teams were ranked in the top three in both categories.

"This team effort has further fueled the innovation of Java technology; so that it can be linked more closely to daily life and with business applications. JPC has been very successful and is an ideal talent showcase" said Daniel Yu, president of Global Sales Operations, Sun Microsystems Greater China. "Enthusiastic participation in Java application development by businesses, government, and academia shows that Java technology has become even more powerful in the competitive marketplace." Information about the final winners is available at
