Sun Sets New Four-Way World Record for ECperf Benchmark
Sun Sets New Four-Way World Record for ECperf Benchmark

(August 9, 2002) - Sun Microsystems, Inc. set yet another world record on the ECperf benchmark, this time taking the price-performance leadership position for a four-way system that has a maximum configuration of four CPUs, delivering a 38 percent increase in performance over all earlier results. Three Sun Fire™ V480 servers with 900 MHz UltraSPARC® III processors running the Oracle9i Application Server Release 2 achieved 36,122 Benchmark Business Operations (BBops)/min@Std with a price performance of $12/BBops/min@Std. This configuration, featuring Sun's binary-compatible SPARC/Solaris™ platform, thrusts the Sun Fire V480 server into the price-performance lead, underscoring the value of Sun's entry-level systems with enterprise-strength features at Wintel system price points.

The ECperf benchmark focuses on performance at the application tier, modeling a Fortune 100 manufacturing business. These results demonstrate that the Sun Fire V480 server running Oracle9i Application Server is efficient in handling complex and realistic application-tier workloads containing substantial business logic data. Specifically designed to test the performance of J2EE™based multi-tier enterprise applications, the ECperf benchmark enables information technology managers to model business functions such as ordering, and status checking, in order to enhance their effectiveness for Web-based transactioning.

ECperf is an industry standard benchmark designed to measure the performance of the Java™ 2, Platform Enterprise Edition (J2EE), which are used extensively today to power critical business applications and Web services. The ECperf benchmark is representative of real-world business applications including customer orders, inventory, manufacturing, and supply chain management. For the latest ECperf results visit http://java.sun.com/j2ee/ecperf.

Great! So we can skip all the obsolete Sun Enterprise 420R/450 machines running as 400-450MHz.
Nice machine, the only thing I don't like is the prise tag - per kilogram it costs more than gold....
E.g. buying a system equipped with 16GB instead of 8GB will cost you another USD53,000!!!
(the Sun logo makes the difference!!!)

Maybe they should go for .13um line with like Intel and AMD does and get the CDPUs running at 1.8-2.6GHz???
