Booming Borland Goes Wherever Java Goes
Booming Borland Goes Wherever Java Goes

(March 25, 2002) - Based in Scotts Valley, CA, Borland Software Corporation is another major Jave vendor that has decided-in these budget-restricted times-that what companies need above all is "middleware" that can integrate their existing (and inevitably different) software and hardware platforms. Yes, Borland too has been bitten by the Web services bug. In addition to helping developers build and deploy software, the company wishes also to enable the integration of software applications. Using (what else?) Web services.

Accordingly, the company offers developers tools for a wide range of operating systems, including Windows, Linux, and Macintosh, and all its best-in-class technology solutions are dedicated to interoperability.

As a Platinum Sponsor of the JavaOne extravaganza for Javaholics, what is Borland unveiling this week? After all, there are now two dozen different companies whose solutions promise, as Borland's do, to "provide customers the freedom to develop applications, deploy them anywhere, and integrate and manage them across the enterprise...[enabling] organizations to increase productivity and deliver higher performance projects faster and on budget, while lowering total cost of ownership."

Maybe so. But only one of them is called Borland. Founded in 1983 and now with operations worldwide, Borland products and services for the Java platform include JBuilder, Borland Enterprise Studio for Java, the Optimizeit Suite, Borland Enterprise Server, JDataStore, TeamSource DSP, JBuilder MobileSet and Borland Web Services Kit for Java.

Essentially, everywhere that Java goes, Borland goes with it. So whether developers are using J2EE, J2SE, J2ME, Web Services, database applications, or Web applications, they've gotten used to looking to Borland for its amazing array of highly rated and widely-used Java development solutions.

At JavaOne 2002 the company will be encouraging Java developers to innovate, integrate, and communicate with Borland Web services solutions--developing and consuming Web services with JBuilder and the Borland Web Services Kit for Java, for example, then deploying them using Borland Enterprise Server.

Following Sun's own vigorous mobile lead, Borland is also launching at JavaOne application development resources for the wireless developer community. By teaming up with none other than Sprint PCS, Borland aims to extend the development of wireless applications for Java-enabled phones and devices that run on Sprint's all-digital, all PCS nationwide wireless network. The arrangement involves Sprint helping with the distribution of JBuilder MobileSet and Borland helping in return with support for the Sprint PCS Wireless Toolkit. The combination is certain to spur more developers into creating more applications for Java-enabled phones...another of the recurring themes of this year's JavaOne.
