New PointBase White Paper Explains Rapid Growth in Java Embedded Databases
New PointBase White Paper Explains Rapid Growth in Java Embedded Databases

(January 17, 2003) - A new white paper written by PointBase presents compelling economic and technical reasons why a growing number of developers are choosing to use a Java embedded database in Java-based application initiatives. Benefits of using a Java embedded database include lower total cost of ownership, shorter development cycles, easier deployment, and greater customer satisfaction.

Java is already a major development language and may become the dominant language in 2005, says PointBase. With potentially millions of applications being developed with Java, savvy developers have already begun to realize the numerous benefits of using a Java embedded database.

PointBase encourages developers to consider five key criteria when selecting an embedded database for their Java applications:

  • The embedded database should be written in Java: Why lose one of the significant advantages of developing in Java: true cross-platform portability?
  • The embedded database should be robust, standards-based, provide full SQL access and be able to synchronize data with major enterprise databases for mobile or remote applications.
  • The embedded database should have a small footprint, provide significant storage and have minimal impact on downloads.
  • The embedded database should require near-zero administration. A self-tuning, completely integrated embedded database should not require a database administrator at any point in its usage.
  • The embedded database should be transparent to the end-user. Deployment should be a simple, one-step process in which the application and database are downloaded together in a single executable file.
The white paper "Selecting an Embedded Database for Java Application Development" can be downloaded at http://www.pointbase.com.
