Apple's Mac OS X Delivers a Full Implementation of J2SE
Apple's Mac OS X Delivers a Full Implementation of J2SE

(March 14, 2003) - Apple has taken Java to the next level with the release of the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition, version 1.4.1 for Mac OS X. This release delivers hundreds of new features, performance improvements, and unique benefits on Mac OS X by integrating Java more closely with technologies such as Aqua, Quartz Extreme, and Universal Access, as well as providing native applet support for Apple's new Web browser, Safari.

The release supports the new native I/O API (NIO) and XML technologies, including support for SAX 1.0/2.0, DOM 1.0/2.0, and XSLT. It offers more security-oriented APIs for Kerberos, certificate handling, authentication and authorization, secure sockets, and cryptography. Internationalization and localization enhancements in this release support Unicode 3.0. There's also IPv6 support and APIs for logging, regular expression handling, and handling user preferences.

The Java 1.4.1 release for Mac OS X offers better Java applet support for Safari and other Web browsers that take advantage of the Java Internet Plug-In. Applets load faster than previously and the plug-in supports new advanced caching features for Java classes and JAR files. Certificates used in signed applets are now stored directly into the Mac OS X Keychain, providing centralized access.

All Java applications and applets use Aqua, and all drawing is handled by Quartz Extreme, for improved graphics operations and scrolling performance. The user interface elements are more responsive and snappier than previous releases, and more closely match Apple's Human Interface Guidelines.

Java applications with this release meet the U.S. government's Section 508 requirements for Universal Access. All features for Universal Access in Mac OS X 10.2 are available to Java applications. The release includes text-to-speech user interface elements, mouse key and keyboard focus control, and assistive device support.

Many industry-leading tools can be used to develop Java applications on Mac OS X, including IntelliJ’s IDEA, Borland’s JBuilder, Oracle’s JDeveloper, Eclipse, Sun’s NetBeans, and others.

For more information on the advantages of J2SE version 1.4.1 for Mac OS X, see www.apple.com/java.
