netomat Toolset Demonstrates Power of Java
netomat Toolset Demonstrates Power of Java

(June 19, 2003) - netomat is the first broad consumer-facing, user-friendly set of tools to author, message, update, and monitor multimedia e-mails, Websites, and blogs as well as interactive multimedia spaces or bulletin boards. netomat's technology also allows users to embed tools so that recipients/viewers can edit and annotate messages with all changes captured. The core innovation underlying all netomat-based language is a powerful new XML-based language called netomatic mark-up language (nml). "netomat is Java and XML with personality," says Maciej Wisniewski, netomat's chief scientist and founder.

netomat's software not only shows the value of Java on the desktop but the power of Java as an end-to-end system:

  • netomat's application demonstrates the strength and flexibility of Java for building consumer authoring and messaging tools, and can be used by anyone, not just a high-end programmer or designer;
  • netomat's server demonstrates the power of J2EE for storing, managing and distributing content across many users;
  • netomat's applet-based player demonstrates the important role that Java should play in creating the next-generation internet because of its openness and unique ability to deliver both content and rich application functionality efficiently and securely across platforms - including PCs, J2ME-enabled wireless devices, and set-tops boxes.

    netomat puts individuals at the center of their own communication network - breaking down barriers between e-mail, Web publishing, blogging and instant messaging. The software is built entirely on open standards, formats and protocols, making it easy to enable two-way communication using multiple media via multiple modes to and from multiple devices.

    netomat was developed as an art project, based on an experimental language, NML (netomatic markup language). NML is itself an artistic creation, devised as a dialect of XML. The netomat project occupied a pivotal, and highly popular, role in the Whitney's 2001 BitStreams show: more than one million people to date have downloaded the project from the Whitney site.
