"Web Services Put People in the Center of the Action," Says Bill Gates

(August 21, 2002) - Speaking to developers in Canada this week, after a four-year hiatus from speaking publicly north of the border, Microsoft's chairman and chief software architect Bill Gates appropriately made the crossing of boundaries one of the themes of his remarks. The sharing of data across systems and device boundaries, for example, was something that XML is making ever more possible, Gates explained - adding, "We're seeing that basic connectivity isn't enough. The most interesting uses of connectivity require a platform that doesn't just show things to people on a screen, but which also allow them to exchange information." Of course, in Gates's universe at least, the world of XML Web services is being made real best by the .NET platform, which MS's supremo summarized as being a platform that allows new products and applications to be developed "with XML at their core." "Companies are understanding that their existing code can be brought to this world, and how," Gates added. Reader Feedback: Page 1 of 1
