Microsoft, America Online, and Yahoo! Join Forces Against Spam

(April 29, 2003) - Microsoft, AOL, and Yahoo! have announced a commitment to work together and with other industry stakeholders to help fight spam. The announcement is a first step toward a broader online industry effort to address the problem of unsolicited commercial e-mail. The group will initiate an open dialogue that will include organizations across this industry to drive technical standards and industry guidelines that can be adopted regardless of platform. The group will initially focus on four key areas:
The companies believe that spam can only be significantly addressed through a comprehensive approach, including technology, responsible customer communications, appropriate legislation, enforcement, and consumer education. This week, the Federal Trade Commission's Spam Forum provides an opportunity for industry, government, and technology to address the spam problem and restore the integrity of Internet users' e-mail experience.
