IoT Cloud Service-Centric Embedded Security on the Rise
Complete Internet of Things (IoT) embedded device security is not just about the device but involves the entire product's identity, data and control integrity, and services traversing the cloud. A device can no longer be looked at as an island; it is a part of a system. In fact, given the cross-domain interactions enabled by IoT it could be a part of many systems. Also, depending on where the device is deployed, for example, in the office building versus a factory floor or oil field, security has to be weaved into processes without affecting operational reliability, uptime, efficiency and safety requirements. This issue is compounded by the magnitude of smart and connected devices that are projected to be disseminated throughout the network in all verticals.
Gartner estimates that by 2020 there will be 20.8 billion IoT devices in use worldwide. If this is the case, then the threat surface for hackers will be massive. Since these devices will all have a cyber-connection, one attack can virtually affect many devices globally in various verticals simultaneously. Since most of these devices will be deployed via service providers (Telco, ISP, IoTSPs, etc.) it is increasingly important for them to prepare a global IoT embedded security strategy.
Here in lies the crucial theme of our research. DWE sees an important need in the industry to understand the opportunities/liabilities at stake for addressing IoT embedded device security. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Dennis Ward, Founder and Principal Analyst at Dennis Ward Enterprises, will discuss the economics at stake. In addition, he will explore various topologies and encryption methods in play to address this issue. Finally, he will review the consortia and standards initiatives evolving to tackle aspects of this concern.
Prior to joining DWE, Mr. Ward has held various technical marketing, business, engineering, testing and management consulting positions in the U.S. and abroad for leading companies such as Metaswitch Networks, Cisco Systems, Adaptive, NET, Sun Microsystems, Mitsubishi, CableLabs, Microsoft, Siemens, AT&T, and EarthLink. As an entrepreneur, he co-founded iThinkTest, Inc., a test engineering consulting firm. He also co-founded DWE, an IoT analysis and solutions firm. As an educator and BSEE graduate from M.I.T, Mr. Ward has taught courses on a university level, authored numerous blogs, reports and topical articles covering various aspects of the M2M/IoT market and has been quoted in news and trade journals. He is a frequent speaker, panelist, and moderator at industry tradeshows.
@ThingsExpo - The World's Largest 'Internet of Things' Event, November 1-3, 2016, at the Santa Clara Convention Center!
All major researchers estimate there will be tens of billions devices - computers, smartphones, tablets, and sensors - connected to the Internet by 2020. This number will continue to grow at a rapid pace for the next several decades.
