AJAXWorld News Desk The Role of AJAX in Web 2.0 Apps: Schmidt vs Owyang
Google CEO Schmidt vs Web Strategist Owyang on the Role of AJAX in Web 2.0 Applications

In Korea to attend the Seoul Digital Forum, Schmidt puzzled the blogosphere by describing Web 2.0 as "a different way of building applications using AJAX as the underlying technology." As if alternative approaches to building Rich Internet Applications, such as those made possible using OpenLaszlo or Microsoft Silverlight or Adobe AIR maybe didn't exist. He was quick to move on to how the new generation of tools being introduced by Google (and others) would very soon be ushering in a very different application model, "Web 3.0" – which in turn he defined as applications that are pieced together which are relatively small, the data is in the cloud, apps can run on any device (PC or mobile), apps are very fast, very customizable, and distributed virally by social networks and/or e-mail, not bought in stores. Canadian blogger Chris Dumke noted, after viewing the whole thing, appropriately enough, on a YouTube video: "At first Schmidt refuses to indulge in “hype-terms”, such as Web 2.0 and others. But he can’t resist speaking about connected, atomic, high-performance Internet apps and risks calling this Web 3.0."The discussion about defining Web 2.0 dates back at least as far 2005, when technology commentator Jonathan Boutelle madehis famous "AJAX != web 2.0" declaration. "In fact, it is in many ways in opposition to Web 2.0, Boutelle wrote in July of that year. "AJAX applications create web-pages that are less machine-readable/linkable," he continued, whereas "Web 2.0 is about making websites machine readable so that content can squirt seamlessly between unrelated sites." Boutelle took a particularly extreme position, mind you: "Technologies like RSS, RESTian APIs, and XHTML/CSS are the core of Web 2.0. Social networks and tagging and attention are at the core of Web 2.0. Not rich client technologies like AJAX."He was perhaps echoing a similarly extreme position staked out all the way back in 2004 by none other than Jef Bezos of Amazon, who at a conference in San Francisco declared: "Web 1.0 was making the Internet for people. Web 2.0 is making the Internet better for computers."The role of AJAX and Rich Internet Applications will be front, left, and center at next month's AJAXWorld Conference & Expo 2007 West in Silicon Valley. The AJAXWorld event has, in less than 18 months, grown from a single track, one-day seminar into a four-day international conference & expo, with more than 150 sessions delivered in 10 simultaneous tracks, by more than 120 faculty members. Google speakers have frequently spoken at AJAXWorld in the past, from Adam Bosworth and Paul Rademacher to Adam Sah and Chris Schalk. The world’s leading Rich Internet Applications & Web 2.0 event is expected to attract more than 2,000 i-technology developers. AJAXWorld grew from a single track, one-day seminar, less than a year ago, into a four-day international conference & expo with more than 150 sessions delivered in ten simultaneous tracks, by more than 150 faculty members. Track 01: Rich Internet Applications Track 02: Web 2.0 Enterprise Mashups Track 03: Enterprise AJAX Applications Track 04: RIA Frameworks & Toolkits Track 05: Security in RIA Applications Track 06: Server-Side AJAX Track 07: iPhone AJAX Applications Track 08: Silverlight – Flex – Java FX Track 09: Bleeding-Edge AJAX Applications Track 10: OpenLaszlo Diamond Track The conference now includes the world famous AJAXWorld University's AJAX Developer Bootcamp, OpenLaszlo Track and Adobe Flex 3 Developer Bootcamp.
