Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Flash Animation Comes to Mobile Phones
Flash Animation Comes to Mobile Phones

Actimagine, a French software company, is planning a revolution in wireless programming. Its new software MobiClip, can transform popular and easy-to-use programming platforms like Flash, and files such as Adobe Acrobat, into content for mobile phones.

Currently, Java is the dominant choice for programming games and content for mobile phones. Actimagine CEO Andre Pagnac explained that Flash animation has great potential, because "The best programmers aren't necessarily the most creative, and the best creative people usually don't understand Java programming."

There are limits to the techology as it exists now: users need to download Actimagine's proprietary player to run the games or animation. Also, MobiClip currently works only on high-end smart phones with operating systems like Symbian or Microsoft. Pagnac noted that users of these phones are in the minority, but still, this is a start. MobiClip can function on phones from Nokia or other proprietary systems, but the manufacturers would need to embed Actimagine's software in their handsets during manufacturing.

Pagnac is hoping MobiClip's advantages will boost demand. Creating a game with Flash and converting it to a mobile phone format takes days, compared to weeks needed to program a similar game in Java. Pagnac also believes the popularity of Flash animation on the Internet will translate into demand for it on mobile phones.

Actimagine will offer Flash games in Europe starting this July. The company also has its eye on the Asian market, with plans to establish Asia-Pacific headquarters in Singapore.
